CNET: Convert an old PC into an MP3 jukebox (http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11319_7-6361302-1.html?tag=cnetfd.ld2)
An interesting article, but for those of you who build or have built your own systems before, how difficult would it be to change the above directions to create a media center PC? Obviously a little more RAM, Windows Media Center, and a different card (do they make video and sounds cards as one?).

I've been contemplating assembling a media center, but if building one would be cheaper as it appears, that could be a very cool project. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Cool idea.TO answer your question, I dont think any manufacturer makes an "all in one" video and sound card.

Hauppauge makes a card that does video capture, compression (both with audio), and TV out / playback.

Don't know if it works with Windows MCE. I think there is a version that does, but I'm not certain.

some believe the era of HTPC is going away.

What with dvr and dvdrw consoles.

why spend 1000 to build a HTPC when you can spend a couple hundred and get a dvr?

Unless you want to PC on your TV or do gaming, internet, etc.

My thought would be the DVR capability, burning, massive storage for video and music. I'm not convinced of this idea yet (my biggest question mark is the ability to record and watch at the same time--that might take a little research).

That was the big hitch I found. Does anyone know, do they make "shells" like the one mentioned in the article that would fit both a sound and video card
