It's great that Houston is just hours away from getting an MLS team, we all hoped and wished for, but the truth be known it kinda suxs knowing SJ couldn't step up to get a SSS built in time to save there team from relocating. The history and great fan base will be missed.
As we all know we went thru the same thing... constant threats from the owner to move the team if a new crip was not in there future. Once we lost the Oilers we weren't going to go thru that again with the Astros and Rockets, so the voters steped up and got it done. I'm sure The Quakes will live again. So go get your ducks in a row and check back with us in '07. So SJ you can love us or hate us... I understand
BTW.... L.A kiss my A**! :D

It's unfortunate for the fans when a team has to relocate. I also lived in Denver when the NHL Colorado Rockies relocated to New Jersey to become the Devils, so I've actually seen two teams that I've supported move. Of course, the old Rockies were previously the Kansas City Scouts, and Denver regained an NHL team when the Quebec Nordiques moved there and became the Avalanche. That's worked out quite well. And while we miss the Oilers, many of us probably think that Houston's better off in the long-run with the Texans and Bob McNair.

If AEG moves to Houston, then hopefully they and MLS will allow a future team in the Bay Area to keep the name, logo, hardware, etc. AEG has apparently said it wouldn't move the trademarks and such and there's really no business reason why they couldn't keep the intellectual property and associated historical items in reserve in the Bay Area.

Yep, Houston got the owner and franchise that us local gridiron fanatics deserved after all the sh!t we had to endure with he that shall not be named. Ya know Anderson, if I ever had anything to do with Team Houston I would hold a burning of Pig Adams with all the hinchada outside Robertson Stadium before each and every home game. Like a ritual, I would burn him in a pinyata like form or a pic will do. That would be the signal that our hinchada supporters can then storm in the stadium and begin their ruckus! Then with a SSS later on I would paint his ugly mug on the ground where our torciada will stand and sing.

All goal scoring records, wins, losses, ties, shutouts, bookings, hardware, banners and everything else should be put in storage in San Jose. That fan base has got to have a team back and soon! I just don't understand how our luck is at the expense of the franchise that beat D.C.U., the league's crown champs, in the inagural MLS match in April of 1996! Freakin Wynalda was my idol. I've even chatted with the man. I've always remembered that goal that night to keep the game from an opening day 0-0.

Our Team Houston hinchada ought to turn west before kickoff each home game and sing as loud as possible the first few lines of Amazing Grace. Just a classy way for one city's fans, that know the gut wrenching feeling of lossing a football team...regardless of code...to say peace be to you San Jose and LA will always suck!

On a dark day like this, thanks to all posters in this thread. You all have class and it is appreciated by Earthquake fans! The Earthquakes will resurface and as mentioned, start the tradition over again...

I just want to say thanks to the Houston fans. The vast majority of you seemed to have been supportive of the Quakes staying in San Jose, and Houston getting an expansion team instead. The pressure is on you now to make it work in your city. Just please do us a favor. Please tell your owners to let San Jose retain the legacy of the Quakes, its trophies, colors, records, etc. Tell them you want to build your own history. Thanks.

Not that there's anything wrong with bobbleheads.

All goal scoring records, wins, losses, ties, shutouts, bookings, hardware, banners and everything else should be put in storage in San Jose. That fan base has got to have a team back and soon!In addition, all that history, along with the intellectual property, would be valuable to a new team in that market. It would be wasteful to move trademarks, historical items, and the like to a new market where they won't be as valuable. I get your point about the fans' passion - just adding that it also makes sense from an economic standpoint to keep all those items in that market.

I just don't understand how our luck is at the expense of the franchise ...It's all about the comparative economics of the short-term and long-term venues and associated costs of doing business. We get emotionally invested in our pro sports teams, but they're ultimately business assets run by business people. Having seen two pro sports teams that I supported relocate, I'm reminded that they're not really "our" teams every time the PA announcer shouts "here's your [city name][nickname]!" They're really AEG's, or McNair's, or Les Alexander's asset. We're all just engaging in an entertaining fiction in identifying with any pro sports team. It's a great thing to do and I'll do so when we get an MLS team, but we should understand what we're getting into. I'm not saying that's the way things ought to be - just that it's how things are. College sports, OTOH, are a little different. My Rice Owls may never again beat Texas in my lifetime, but I know that I'll be able to spend the rest of my life watching them try.

Just a classy way for one city's fans, that know the gut wrenching feeling of lossing a football team...regardless of code...to say peace be to you and LA will always suck!Should we turn toward San Diego and do the same thing at Rockets games? ;)

Well, as long as Casserly figures out that he needs to upgrade the offensive line...

I'm a native Houstonian, and I'm happy that my hometown is getting a team, one which will become every bit the whipping boy for the Super Hoops that the Chicago Fire currently is, but having been through the Oilers move in the '90s, I sympathize with the Quakes fans.

So you guys are going to be getting quite a team. Some of the Quakes fans are hoping that the players will "boycott" a move, but that's bull, these guys are professionals so anyone who is under contract will be joining you in Houston. Anyone who wants to "retire" and play on Troy Dayak's California Cougars indoor team with Ronnie Ekelund can do that, but I don't think any of the players are that stupid.

The only exceptions I can think of are Pat Onstad -- he's old, and he's Canadian, so he might melt in the Houston summer -- Mark Chung who is close to retirement if he hasn't already retired -- and Dominic Kinnear -- he has lots of ties to the Bay Area, but then again he's only got five years of coaching experience (three as assistant, two as head coach in SJ) so he can't exactly call his own shots on his future -- stepping down from the top league in the US to go be a college coach or something is a dumb career move. This is assuming that the ownership does not replace last year's Coach of the Year, although given the recent performance of past Coaches of the Year like Andrulis, maybe that's not a bad idea.

DeRosario is awesome but he's not long for Houston, everyone expects him to be the centerpiece of the Toronto franchise in 2007.

So you can expect a number of up-and-comers and serviceable journeymen like Rico Clark, Brian Ching, Brian Mullan, etc. Probably none of the guys will get called up for the World Cup so you guys can clean up in June when most other teams will lose a star or two.

Best of luck.

I might be getting ahead of myself, but if the league would allow De Rosario move to Toronto from Houston then why can't we try to bring Dempsey from the Revs to Houston, he's a local boy aswell. I can see how NE may have a problem with it, but should Houston have the same gripe with Toronto?
Thanks for the Good luck! :D

Does anyone see some of our local boys wanting to come home and play?

Smack is only good if both sides win consistently, it's just not fair comparing Dallas and Houston.

Seriously though I don't wanna get ahead of anything here but I would fully expect a large travelling contingent for EVERY game between these 2 teams.

Back to the topic of this thread: I have very mixed emotions about this apparent news. Top flight soccer belongs in a few places in the US: Washington, DC; Los Angeles; Chicago; and the Bay Area. Yes, we have some other great soccer-supporting cities in the US but fans in those cities are special. I hope Houston can can produce a similarly passionate fan base here.

So my heart goes out to the SJ fans. I wish we were getting a team in a different way. But we'll try to live up to the high standards of the 'Quakes supporters here in Houston.
