Veltins is a big bier brand in Germany... that'd be like pumping bud into Miller or Coors Stadium?

Im pretty sure FIFA has made sure only anheiser-busch brands will be sold in any WC stadium.

noooooooooo

Oh well, I won't likely have too many stadium beers. Those savages don't even have beermen.

I've never wanted nor needed a stadium beer here in Amerika. I doubt I'll need or want any in Deutschland.

edit for clarification: I'm not talking about abstinence, either.

Then I don't have to waste my money on beer in the stadia. Fair enough.

And FTR that's just an insane decision.

Between the 5-6 hours of drinking before each game and the flask I'll be bringing into the stadium, I doubt I'll need any stadium beers either. Not so much because of the brand (Bud is actually a huge step up from the Busch Lite and Natty Lite that forms the backbone of my college diet) but because I'm not about to drop 20 Euros on a beer.

Incidentally I like to go with nothing but American beer, food, etc. on a US gameday anyway. I love German beer and food but on the 12th, 17th, and 22nd I'll be all about Bud, Beam, and burgers (at least before the game).

I'm hoping you're incorrect...

Fans attending matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ and FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 will be able to sample beer supplied by FIFA Partner Anheuser-Busch, Inc., and Germany’s Bitburger thanks to a cooperation agreement between the two brewers.

The agreement means that Anheuser-Busch and Bitburger beers will be served in general public areas at FIFA World Cup stadia. Anheuser-Busch maintains marketing rights to the FIFA World Cup as the “official beer” sponsor. Bitburger will not be granted advertising rights at the FIFA World Cup, nor is the company permitted to use the official FIFA trademarks for promotional purposes. Anheuser-Busch has been a FIFA World Cup Partner since 1986.

That's from a FIFA press release last December. Bitburger isn't the best German beer, but it's fine when it's fresh. As long as they don't want more than 3-4 Euro I can live with that.

It's June in Germany. You won't be able to swing a dead cat without hitting someone ready to hand you a nice, cool, Weisbeer... :D

Actually, you only need a couple beers to keep you from losing your buzz. But what does sample mean anyway? I don't sample any beer! Bitburger will suffice between screams!

Oh, by the way, if you want the BEST beer in Germany, you must get some Weltenberg! You'll only find it at the Weltenberg monestary at the narrows of the Danube at little above Regensberg. I almost had to give up my citizenship after I had some!

Nothing more un-German than Budweiser und Hamburgers. ;)

I know what you're saying though and I'm with you.

Plan to arrive in Gelsenkirchen in the late-morning after a 4-hour train ride, find a local place to enjoy some excellent German beer and food, take the tram out to the Veletins Stadium, watch the U.S. beat the Czechs, then spend the rest of the night hitting on some Czech chippie until I get the late train back to home base in Diebach, getting in about 6:30AM, then sleeping for the rest of the day.

:D

I'm firmly convinced I'll meet my future wife on this trip.

Yes!
Furthermore you will find it at the "Mommsen Eck-Haus der 100 Biere", Potsdamer Platz, Berlin or at very good beverage stores. ;)

There is still a lawsuit going on headed by "unified German breweries" (Veltins, Paulaner, etc) who are trying to get exemptions to serve their beer inside the stadia. Also, Anheuser Busch has a counter-suit to restrict how close they can sell their beer to the venues.

"It's June in Germany. You won't be able to swing a dead cat without hitting someone ready to hand you a nice, cool, Weisbeer... "

depending on the venue....in Gelsenkirchen, go with a solid Dusseldorf Altbier, or a good Kolsh. By the time they get to Nurnburg though, weissbier all the way...
