I'm bouncing around to do some sightseeing, but did find rooms in Gelsenkirchen and K-town so that I have a place to sleep after celebrating getting points from the first two games...can't make the ghana game since I only got 2 weeks off of work. boo.
Arriving at Frankfurt and staying 3 nights. Watching games on the river...check it out: Frankfurt Main Arena (http://www.frankfurt-tourismus.de/cms/tourismussuite/en/events_trade_fairs_messe_frankfurt/fifaworldcup_hotels_fifa_wm_2006/soccer_football_worldcup_events_main_arena2.html?sprache=%2Fcms%2Ftourismussuite%2Fen%2Fevents_trade_fairs_messe_frankfurt%2Ffifaworldcup_hotels_fifa_wm_2006%2Fsoccer_football_worldcup_events_main_arena2.html)
Gelsenkirchen: Ibis Gelsenkirchen, right by the Hbf. Booked through FIFA Hotels at 75 Euro.
K-town: Pension Blum, 100 meters from Hbf and 10 minute walk to stadium. Awesome location for only 70 Euro a night.
Booked through pension manager himself, since they don't have a website. If interested, send e-mail to Stefan Wilding at Pensionblum1@aol.com

Thanks so much for the info!! I went to FIFA.com and checked but it looks like Gelsenkirchin is now booked pretty solid at least for a one night stay -- any other ideas here. Also, those of you who are not staying in Gelsenkirchin and don't have a car -- how do you plan on getting out as the game starts at 6pm local time?? Is this even going to be possible?? I'd love to get back to Amsterdam that night and stay there but I don't see how I'mm going to be able to do it . . . Rep prepared and waiting for anyone who can help. Thanks!!!

I have a place to stay in Kaiserslautern, but not Gelsenkirchin. I was thinking of camping nearby, as it's a common thing to do in Europe. I wonder...if enough of us could get together, we could we could make a little fan village for a night. It only takes a tent, a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag. Food could be had at nearby stores and we could bus out to a common location. I have all kinds of portable camp stoves...and I'm sure fuel is easily had there.

I booked a Best Western in Nuremberg before the draw. We have tickets to the game on the 22nd. Most places were booked by then.

I'm staying with friends and friends of friends, probably for the whole month. I'm very lucky in this respect. I'll be traveling to other countries in between games, though, and will probably be staying in hotels there.
I looked into hotels and couldn't find anything that looked reasonable and safe in any city I wanted to be in in Germany (though some of the info on this thread is rather appealing). I also looked into hostels and didn't like the fact that the prices seemed gouged a bit and the hostels generally won't let you store your luggage there.

Great site for those of you still looking to book rooms:
http://www.hoteldatenbank.de/
search under "Stadt" link at the top... this is a list of ALL cities and their "listed" hotels. I searched neighboring cities of Kaiserslauetern with web addresses I could email (ie. websites that I could get an email address off of... since it is bloody expensive to fax something!!).
Of course, having a good, detailed map of Germany is a must in order to know what towns and small cities neighbor a certain area. Sorry I cannot assist you in this department... perhaps someone has a good link?

I recently booked several locations through this site. There were lots of options still for nuremburg when I booked last week. Nothing in k-town or g-town for game nights but probably not much there anyway in terms of places to stay. Hopefully the bars are open late in kaiserslautern and i'll sleep off the victory celebration on a morning train to berlin.
