It looks like about 15 "pots" for 26 letters of the alphabet. Each pot potential has 100 applicants. Lets assume on average the pots actually have 75 applicants. So from the applications received by mail I would guess there have been 1,125 applicants.

From the faxes I would guess via this method. Takes 5 minutes to process the faxes. Lets assume fax lines open for 8 hours. Lets assume 10 fax lines. That would give us about 960 applicants via fax.

Total applicants would be around 2000. My best guess is about 2 tickets per applicant per match. So total tickets per match applied for of 4,000. I would guess after allocations to MVPs etc, about 2,500 tickets per match are available. So the odds of ticket orders being processed if they randomize between applications received through Tuesday (which I think would be the only fair thing to do) is about 63%.

There ya have it.

Other tidbits of information to consider. The USSF had a good idea of the number of potential applicants when assigning the passwords. The fact that they went with a five digit confirmation number suggests it will in the thousands.

I'm also comfortable with the assumption that half the applications come from fax and half mail. There is a poll on these boards showing half of the folks trying to fax didn't get through. I'm assuming most of these then decided to overnight the application. Also have limited corroboration of this from some non-Big Soccer people who are applying for tickets.

So do we think that the sequencing number is relative?

For instance:
8200 = The first FedExed Applicant with a "C"
8201 = The second FedExed Applicant with a "C"
etc.

This won't really tell you how many were ahead of you in the whole alphabet, but it could give you some type of a speculative indication of where you stand.

For arguments sake, say the most common letter for last names is "C", if your confirmation is 8200, then you most likely are one of the first applicant

right?

Perhaps, like the fax numbers, the number of tickets plays in with the last two digits. So, I am an "S", and my number is actually 914X, and I ordered 6 tickets (2 for each game in round 1)--so the next "S" would be 6 beyond mine.

In which case, there would be a lot less applicants than we think.

That is the case. I used numbers in the 8200s earlier.

Ah-ha. I posted on another thread about the last digit. It hasn't been getting as much attention as the others, now has it.

The following is the email I received when I complained about this whole process (having begun my attempting to fax my order in at 1:20 pm and not having it accepted until 7 pm est.) According to US Soccer, the ridiculous faxing idea was FIFA's rule. (Although I am not sure whether or not this is simply passing the buck.)

Like others, I will not feel screwed unless I don't get tickets. Then I will be outraged. However, no matter what, the idea for these orders to be faxed in to a single fax number was assinine at best. I felt like I was trying to win the car on the radio. The system has to change before WC 2010. I do love the "as anticipated" line because it lends me to believe that if this was anticipated, then they are simply utterly incompetent as well as lacking in forsight!!!!!!!

"Dear U.S. Soccer Fan,

As anticipated, U.S. Soccer received a huge response to the ussoccerfan.com pre-sale of 2006 FIFA World Cup tickets today from thousands of members across the United States and abroad. Accommodations were made for the anticipated number of incoming faxes, however, as with any event in such a high demand, the initial start of an on-sale is the busiest period.

Please continue to attempt to fax your completed order form to the number provided - (312) 528-7049 – if you have not already submitted your order through another method. Faxes are continuing to be accepted as quickly as possible. On-line sales, in a format that U.S. Soccer was confident would provide the best service for U.S. Soccer fans, were not permitted through FIFA Regulations regarding Member Association sales of 2006 FIFA World Cup Tickets.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

So, I have a question for you guys.

I won't be able to order tickets from USSF until very late Tuesday night. Do I have any chance at all of getting these, or should I just prepare to take it prison bitch style from the scalpers??

Before taking it bitch style, you can still apply at the fifa site online for the same us games. The only benefit of buying from US Soccer is the bigger likelihood of sitting with us fans, although if they won't group sam's army together, i doubt they will group anyone else. The other benefit is only having to compete with US Soccer members for tix. However, with the way that they have botched this, it might even be easier to buy them at fifaworldcup.com
