i watched the wc draw on english tv and according to the commentator every national coach was there in leipzig except for one...
pekerman.
does anyone know the reason for this and where he was instead?
it seems inexplicable.
watching the draw felt like a bad dream for me. first the news that pekerman wasn't there and then the three toughest teams we could get. maybe the two things aren't unrelated?
still, to be the best you have to beat the best, and none of our opponents will be pleased they've drawn us.

the circumstances are a little shady...
Julio Grondona, persident of of the football association said Pekermen "didn't feel like going." Tocalli, the assistant, was there. I guess Pekerman had injured his hand and was having surgery or something, but supposedly that could have been done another day. It's not entirely clear...

It's a strange thing. Officially, FIFA announced that he was absent because he had just lost his father, but I had read earlier that this was not true.
Whatever the reason, I still think it's a lack of respect towards FIFA and the rest of the coaches. Specially that Maradona who was also invited as a special guest didn't even bother to reply.
One may not like the glitz and decorum of the FIFA celebrations, but I think it's quite rude to behave like they have.

Peker was in argentina he had some surgery in his hand and decided to watch the draw from home...... To peck its the same exact thing as being there the only difference is that he has his slippers on is in an easy chair and has some good food beside him.... There was no reason TO ACTUALLY BE THERE he found out in the same manner who the cockroches rivals will be.. he had the same reaction toward his group just like he would have had the same reaction in germany.....
Diego is on vacation with chicho serna and just did not want to be bothered with it... he will be in germany for the TV broadcasts to argentina.....
No One ever said this was a mandatory thing and pekerman and maradona have the right to attend or not to attend...
The President of AFA was not thrilled and said he would talk to pekerman about it he said it was some thing you just dont do...

I support Pekermann and Diego for not being there. FIFA is a farce and has treated Argentina like crap for years. Pele was officially called the best player of all time at the broadcast and Maradona's name was again mentioned with the hand goal and quickly glossed over the best goal ever scored. Fact is every FIFA book I own or DVD Brazilains French and other players like Italians are endlessly glorified and Argentines are broguht up only in contreversies or those who have scoed goals against them... in short IM not saying there is a whole conspiracy against us , but it sure does smell strongly like fish!!!!!

i feel v strongly about this. whether argentina has been treated badly by fifa or not, argentina must do all in its power to placate the situation. you can't win a war with them, the best and most sensible thing to do is play the diplomatic game, it is in the best interests of argentine football.
we may be proud that we don't 'suck their ********' but that's fan-speak. it is up to our officials, representatives and association not to be so emotive. pekerman should have been there. every other coach was there not only for the draw, but once the draw was made they would know which venues they were playing at and they have travelled to those venues to start making preparations regarding hotels, training facilities etc. i.e. the sort of preparations the manager must be taking responsibility for. these are the details which make all the difference.
there is a saying in english which goes 'fail to prepare, prepare to fail'.
this is the world cup we're talking about, not some mickey mouse tournament like the confederations cup or the olympics. this is the one that counts. the hopes of a whole nation rest on pekerman and his troops.
he is a national manager, not a club one, he has the time to attend such ceremonies and in my opinion it was his duty to do so.
if his father died, different story. if it was hand surgery, he should have taken some painkillers.
i don't think we are being told the whole story...
p.s. sorry if i sound angry but the world cup only comes around every four years and the last three have been a huge let-down for argentina. it's a long long wait and the people in charge have a responsibility to do things properly and give us every chance of winning. pekeramn achieves nothing by missing the ceremony. all he achieves is possibly upsetting the ruling body.

Could not disagree more, ( don't want to get into a drawn out debate here because the Boca game is on soon ) , I think Argentina and Argentinians have a loooooong history of doing things the hard way and the proud way and I would not give my left testicle to change that, I am proud we stick to our guns, there is no need for Pekermann to have been there and flown to what I saw as a boring night of horrible presentations. Diplomaticly speaking what the hell benefit could be in it for us??? NONE!! We got the results of the draw we know what we need to do now and that is it. Besides we always do our best with a little contreversy and fire in the gut.

First President Kirschner rebuffs the new Pope in his inauguration day, and now this.
Great! Now we have both God and FIFA against us. How the hell are we going to win the World Cup?

i hope you're right. if we don't win it, let's just hope fifa doesn't bear a grudge next time it comes to choosing who the seeds are. fifa, as we all know, is a v political body. however, i understand the appeal in revelling in the role of rebels, just not sure what it achieves.
i am english-born and live in england. i support argentina because both my parents and my whole family are argentine. you are therefore far more in touch with the argentine mentality than me and i respect this and take heed of your views.
i have a more english way of looking at things. for example, i can tell you that if the english manager hadn't attended he would have been sacked.
The President of AFA was not thrilled and said he would talk to pekerman about it he said it was some thing you just dont do...
if this is true then it shows there is friction at the top and i don't think that can be good.
perhaps pekerman is angry that grondona wanted maradona involved in the national set-up.
certainly i think there is more to this story than meets the eye...

How does the draw work, does Fifa set up everything then just say the names out to the public, or do they just draw random on the spot?

I don't understand this attitude. That FIFA is corrupt is a fact, and time will come when people like Blatter will be exposed. But that draw was one of the big celebrations of football, and it should be a pleasure for anyone interested in football to attend. Does it mean that all other 31 coaches are "chupa medias"?
I also don't like Pele's political ways and aspirations. But starting to whine and say that all FIFA is against Argentina and that's why we get bad groups is just childish.

If you have studies statistic than you would know.. It's a given fact that the host Country will always have one the the easiest group..How do we know this if its all by chance and luck? What are the odds of a host country getting the group of death? NONE.. Why is it that BRazil always gets one of the easiest groups in the World Cup.. Nobody is that ********ing lucky.
Brazil 1998 - Norway, Morocco, Scotland
Brazil 2002 - China, Costa rica, Turkey
Brazil 2006 - Australia, Japan, Croatia
I don't mind playing in a group of death but god damn, spread that sh1t around.

i just don't agree. it sounds like a persecution complex or plain paranoia.
sure, there is corruption, every effort is made to let the hosts progress, as we saw last time around. but the draw, at least this time around, was completely fair in my opinion.
brazil would breeze past any group because they are the best at the moment by a long distance. i don't think their group is easy, not at all, it just looks easy because they are so good.
i think we should stop all this conspiracy stuff. fifa is not out to get argentina, more like the other way around.
a lot of the conspiracy stuff started when maradona complained of a stitch-up when he was banned in 94. in my opinion he was banned correctly. just because he was the world's best player doesn't mean he was above the law.
sorry if this upsets a few people.

Firstly I would like to get one thing straight, I never stated that there was a conspiracy with the draw or any such thing, I did however and rightfully so say that I do suspect tht FIFA has their favourites and their agenda,,,, wich is heavily in support of anything or anyone Brazilian or even French. I just find it funny how when I atch a video, DVD or TV program about FIFA's 100 years of history Maradona, Di Stefano, Filol, Kempes, Passarella and many more are hardly ever metnioned , yet Pele is a GOD and Platini is the best of his generation!!!!???? It is pecisely this attitude I abhor from FIFA so screw them and if Pekermann did not want to attend a show run by some twit Klum then so be it, and if he is upset because Maradona was even considered he has every right to be, fact is there is far to much BS politics in the Argie FA for the coach to do his job right.. I just hope all works out.

argentina (not brazil) were hosts in 1978, the last south american country to be granted the privilage, despite the fact the country was under a fascist dictatorship with a dodgy human rights record. i presume no-one believed fifa was anti-argentine then, quite the opposite. therefore all this conspiracy stuff is a recent phenomenon, probably linked to maradona, who may have been paranoid on drugs. if pekerman was showing solidarity for argentina and exercising an anti-fifa agenda by not turning up i think he was misguided. more than likely however, he is in dispute with his own association, which is far from an ideal situation and needs to be resolved fast. for pekerman to do his work to the best of his ability he needs to be at peace with his employers. the job is difficult enough without any undue hassle.

of course it is a recent phenomenom, FIFA hated a coke head wizard showing them up, and true Maradona spoke a lot of bull in his time and still does, but out of some of that BS there is some truth to FIFA being a poerful and at times corrupt institution.... he put them against the wall....
