... But howl me down anyway.
Now that Toronto is to have its MLS team, will North American soccer dare to launch a 'world series'.
(Scuttles under a table and waits for the brickbats.) ;)

Baseball's World Series is believed by many to have got the name from a New York newspaper called the New York World and that happened long before Canada had a major league team.

I did not know that. Thank you. :) However, my cheeky point still stands. ;)

I always believed that as well, but it apparently isn't true: http://www.snopes.com/business/names/worldseries.asp

Thanks Hobbes. Cool stuff.
Just goes to show, come up with a sport that nobody else on earth (at that time) plays and you too can be a World Champion!

how much longer can the NBA legitimately call their guys the world champions without playing outside of their league, you think?

This pre-season marked the first time that an European club team defeated a NBA team on an NBA court.
That is, of course, if you consider the Raptors to be a NBA team.
Maccabi Tel Aviv beat the Dinos on a last second jumper. Vince Carter sucks.
Still...I would susprect it will still be a while before non-NBA teams routinely beat NBA teams--even ones lead by skinny guys named Bosh.
