Yeah but you could have said the same thing for the 50 year previous to 2002...
i'm sure the members of former Politburo would strongly disagree with you.

And you weren't at anytime in the 50 years between 1952 and 2002? PLEASE! You are the favorite but in terms of success in the last 5 years...you guysw won the 2004 World Cup of Hockey but you were also favorites in the 2005 World Championships and lost to the Czechs. The same team that's won the worlds as many times as you in last 5 years (2x). I'm not saying Canada doesn't have a great team I'm just saying don't give them the gold right now. It's still a wide open tournament.

I wouldnt take too much stock into what the americans did in this first match. They no doubt have jetlag, and we're totally unprepared going into this FIRST game. lines basically were formed on the fly and lativa isnt the most piss poor of hockey nations (10th?).. anyways, they (latvia) got a flukey first from the penalty box, and 2 quick in succession (due to our defensemen pinching way too much). irbe also was solid in the net. its the first game everyone, relax.
gomez was horrible (cept for draws).
keith tkachuk and bill guerin were non-existent.
did mike knuble contribute at all?
im prolly being too harsh cuz there were some solid performances from gionta, conroy, hatcher!?!!, and our goalie was not too shabby in net.
gaborik... wow.

umm actually you may have heard of the Soviet Army, ya they were the most successful team (i hate to admit it) during the 70's and until the break up of the Soviet Union. and its definitley not a wide open tournament. its more like a four team tournament between Canada, Czech Rep., Finland, and Sweden. while Russia and Slovakia are good teams they are not great teams. the U.S team isnt what it was back in Salt Lake or the World Cup of Hockey.

[QUOTE=eddieba26]Why?
well had drinks after a Rats game in November w/the neph and several teammates, one of them young Redlihs. Nice guy- reminds me a bit of Nevadas' West Ham Igor - a wild and crazy guy, only in shape. So I'm happy for him and the Latvians. At least Canada woke up after 25 minutes - the US sure as hell didn't. Victory should NEVER come to those who are entitled to it, IMHO. Or, we'd be singing "God save the Queen". No way, no how. Latvia deserved the point, and maybe two.

Did you see the domination in the 3rd period? We outshot them by a ton in the entire game, and aside from a good second period, Latvia didnt deserve a whole lot, certainly not a victory.

You're crazy...there's 12 teams. Any one of 4 you think can win, that's 1/3 of the field! Add two more, Russie and Slovakia who as you say are "good" still have to be considered contenders to win it in some fashion and that's 6 teams or 1/2 the field! It's not wide open though.
(You must be a Leafs fan as you're dillusional like they are!)

I agree...we dominated the third.

Its a good thing this is still the NHL Season, because I dont think canadiens exist during the hockey offseason, and you wouldn't be able to post.

as a matter a fact i am a Leafs fan. and i am not dillusional because i know the Maple Leafs stand near no chance of winning the Stanley Cup unless management smartens up and signs some good free agents and makes a trade for a good goaltender. actually they dont need to make a trade for a good goaltender, they should wait and see what Luongo does since he's a free-agent come July 1st.
and come on the 4 teams i listed are the realistic winners with Canada leading the pac.

okay now don't you think thats a tad bit stereotypical. you're implying that us CANADIANS notice the "a" in there instead of the "e", dont have much of a life outside of hockey. thats complete bulls***.

No I understand! I agree there's four teams that could take gold. Well I say 5, maybe 6 but for the argument I'll say 4...but that's still 1/3 for the field! Surely that counts as wide open! If you add Slovakia and Russia then that's 1/2 of the field. Canada has the best team, without a doubt, but it's not there tournament to lose. Not by a longshot.
Just for kicks I looked up the Olympics hockey odds for winning the Gold and found:
Canada 11/10
Czech Rep 10/3
Sweden 11/2
Russia 11/2
Slovakia 10
Finland 14

i guess by placing all my money on Canada, i won't be able to retire just yet.
