View Full Version : How do we want to do this, Italian America?

You think the WC draw was bad for you, US fan? Hell, at least your rooting interests are straightforward.
Unfortunately, it gets a little complicated for us Italian-Americans. Obviously, I'm going to be pulling for the US when we play Italy, but it's not going to be without reservations. For one, my dad (an honest-to-god Italian) is getting on in years, and he'd like to see Italy win the big one (or at least a big one--I think he'd settle for a Euro Championship) once more before his time is up. For two, there are undoubtedly a bunch of numbnutses on this board who are going to be talking crap about how the Italians are whining, diving, preening sissies who lack testicular fortitude because they often play for the 1-0 result. (Yeah, because instead of trying to, you know, win, they should be sending 10 guys into attack at all times for your entertainment. What a bunch of pu$$ie$.) Anyway, those people are highly annoying (they're already starting to surface) and they make me a little less jazzed about rooting for the US.
But whatever. I'm just praying the both the US and Italy go through. I'm pretty bummed out that they're going to have to play one another, though. Anyone else experiencing this same inner turmoil? I feel like Giuseppe Rossi.

Isn't Claudio Italian-Argentinian-American. i.e. ethnically Italian parents from Argentina who came to America?

His father is from Argentina, but Reyna is a Spanish surname. His mother is from Portugal.

I empathize with your situation as I had the same problem when the US was grouped with Poland in 02. The only difference was that the matchup was the last of the group stage so I knew that Poland was eliminated and the US needed a tie to seal its own fate when the game finally rolled around.
Of course, a couple quick goals and my favorite nation that day turned out to be South Korea.
I guess since the game is second, you'll have a halfway decent idea of what each team will need to keep hope alive.

i am 22, born in america, to american parents, but with a grandmother born in italy. i have one of the "great big italian famalies" and i am very proud of my heritage. for soccer, i have rooted for italy as my primary team since 1994 world cup, the first i remember watching. in the recent years ive found myself much more supportive of the usa. im such a huge us soccer fan its silly these days, hence i guess, why im here with you all haha. but i am going to germany, fax machines willing, and i am going sans-italy jerseys. im going with all my red, white and blue stuff i got!! im bummed i cant really enjoy this world cup cheering for both of them like normal, but hey....im american, so america is who i cheer for, case closed. but thats just me. i play soccer in the summers with alot of guys of italian descent but less removed generationally than me and i can tell ya the lot of them are rooting for italy and thats it...kind of a bummer, but hey the love of the mother country and your roots is a strong one for lots of people...right mr. rossi???

You're thinking of Tab Ramos. Reyna was born in New Jersey, to an Argentine father and Portuguese mother.
