Yeah i'm disappointed both being in the Group of Death.. dont give me that Group C crap, whoever barely managed to win E, gets to face Brazil, lovely.. I would rather have faced Brazil in the Group stages honestly and then not see them again till the finals...

But i also havent worked out where i'm going to stay. Looks like both G-Town and K-town are TINY.. and not many places to stay.. I was thinking of making a month long base in Frankfurt 2-3 hrs by rail from each USA game site.

If you wanted something even closer for G-Town check out Dusseldorf, 35-40 minutes by train or car.. and for K-Town check out Mannheim 45-60 minutes by rail/car..

I'm going with Frankfurt as a base as well.

Gelsenkirchen is the fourth largest city in Germany, much bigger than Dusseldorf. Kaiserslautern is in the middle of noware, but there is a lot in town. Plus it has the largest concentration of Americans outside of the US. You are fine to stary in both cities.

Gelsenkirchen is the 21st biggest German city with a population of about 280.000.
Düsseldorf is the 9th largest with about 570.000.

Just come stay in Berlin. There's like 40 of us and we are all gonna caravan by matches to the game.

Right Mikeymike? :)

I have relatives in cologne. Seems like a pretty good spot for all three matches. Would I be smart to book a hotel/hostel in or near the match city or should I just commute straight from cologne to the stadiums?

Well I thought about doing that but frankly with hostels I can't shake the feeling that the more complicated you make it, the more likely sh¡t is to fall apart.

Also, for those planning to take the hostel route, you have to be under 27 to stay in Bavarian hostels.

Here's the low-down on budget travel in Germany.

Every single one of the venue cities has hostels, I assure you.

After hostels are pensions, a level of hotel so cheap and with so many shared amenities it is not classified as a hotel. Beyond that you have very cheap hotels.

You will likely not take this advice, but if you will be there for even one week, buying "Let's Go" will pay for itself in probably just what you'll save on one night's hostel/hotel bill, not to mention adding value and efficiency to your whole trip. It will list at least a few hostel options in a ranked list and with reviews.

Beyond "Let's Go," because the ones listed there will be the first to fill up, there is hostelworld.com. That is very convenient because it lets you book online and shows you all the room options. But pay attention to the ratings others gave them. The disfavored ones can be really nasty and would not be listed in "Let's Go."

Frankfurt has some hostels, but it is the most expensive city for taking trains to and from for some reason.

You need to get a bahncard from DeutscheBahn if you will be taking trains. This will cut your train-ticket costs by more than half (one-month pass, OR a pass for a certain number of trips w/in a month).

Having the trip planned to the extent you know at least roughly which cities in which days will cut 25-33% off the cost of doing it day-by-day.
...which leads into the fact that you should have your accommodations wrapped up already. I can tell you that in a regular summer, hostels and cheap hotels will be sold out if you try to book less than two weeks in advance. Imagine what it will be like for the world cup.

If you wanna book yourself a place in Nürnberg, there is a fabulous hostel -- it's huge. I stayed there for a few nights during the architectural travels around Europe when I was in college. Give me a bit to search around and find the name of the place.

Here is our schedule just to give some people some ideas if necessary.

Game 1- I am staying in Amsterdam so we will be taking a train to Gelsenkirchen for the game and then back to Amsterdam. Travel to Paris.

Game 2- Traveling in from Paris so we booked a hotel in Frankfurt for game day. Travel to Milan to wear my Run-DMB jersey after he runs all over Italy. Then to Munich.

Game 3- Going to travel from Munich to the game and then back to Munich. Then back to Amsterdam.

I am happy with how it worked out, alot of travel. But in my group I have only been to Sweden, another has only been to Spain and one is an Europe virgin.
