England will most likely use a 4-4-2 system, however against a team like argentina or brazil eriksson may use a diamond in midfield to nullify the oppostions attacking mid eg riqulme, ronaldinho.

Probable line up: Robinson, Neville, Terry, Ferdinand, A.Cole, Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, J.Cole, Owen, Rooney

Keepers

ROBINSON
No1 no doubt, solid but by no means the best in the world.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:100%

JAMES
Can be a decent keeper on his day but far too inconsistent and prone to horrible mistakes, thats why they call him calamity james, does have experience though which makes him likely to travel.
Chances of making squad:85%
Chances of starting:5%

KIRKLAND
quality keeper capable of incredible saves, the reason west brom beat arsenal a while ago, however prone to injury.
Chances of making squad:40%
Chances of starting:2%

GREEN
pretty good keeper, favoured over kirkland by eriksson. he is palying for norwich in the championship though.
Chances of making squad:50%
Chances of starting:2%

Defence
G.NEVILLE
solid right back, great crosser of the ball , works well with beckham, definite starter.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:100%

YOUNG
Has been deputising for neville at right back, did ok, eriksson may prefer to play carragher at rb if neville is unavaible.
Chances of making squad:50%
Chances of starting:10%

TERRY
A starter since rio's drug ban in 2004, the first centre back put down on the team sheet.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:100%

FERDINAND
Eriksson loves him even though hes been awful all year, more likely to start than campbell, i hope sven see's sense soon.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:60%

CAMPBELL
Solid centre back playing better than ever, if he avoids injury it will be a crime if he doesn't start.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:40%

CARRAGHER
Good player his versatility assures his place in the squad though will not start without injuries to others.
Chances of making squad:95%
Chances of starting:15%

KING
More likely to see time in midfield if/when we play with a diamond, did well at centre bck in euro 2004 when others were injured
Chances of making squad:95%
Chances of starting:50%

A.COLE
Will start at left back, one of the best in the world.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:100%

BRIDGE
Will probably travel as coles understudy
Chances of making squad:70%
Chances of starting:10%

KONCHESKY
Decent young left back saw time against arg. won't travel without injuries to cole or bridge.
Chances of making squad:10%
Chances of starting:1%

NEVILLE
Will probably make the trip due to versatility, can play at left/right back or in midfield, not likely to start.
Chances of making squad:60%
Chances of starting:10%

Midfield

BECKHAM
Captain and therefore will start
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting: 100%

GERRARD
You'd think a definite starter but have not seen him play well with lampard and if one has to go Sven will keep Lampard
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:90%

LAMPARD
In incredible form, the england midfield will be built around him
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:100%

J.COLE
Will play on the left in a 442 system, however will be the one dropped in a formation change to allow king to play def. mid.
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:75%

WRIGHT-PHILLIPS
Beckhams unerstudy, will probably see alot of time as a sub.
Chances of making squad:90%
Chances of starting:20%

JENAS
Good player, can play across the midfield, not n the best form but sven seems to like him.
Chances of making squad:60%
Chances of starting:10%

DYER
Great player, plagued by injury if he stays fit for the rest of the season and plays to the best of his ability will definitely travel, however thats unlikely
Chances of making squad:50%
Chances of starting:15%

PARKER, HARGREAVES, CARRICK
All in similar situations only one or maybe two will travel, Carrick is by far the best footballer, Parker is a better athlete, Hargreaves baffles me by even being close to contention, if he travels at the expense of carrick it will be a travisty
Chances of making squad:Hargeaves 50%, carrick 35%, parker 25%
Chances of starting:all of them 10% (although carrick or parker would be better than king at the bottom of the diamond)

Attack

OWEN
Leading scorer if fit will start
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:100%

ROONEY
The hope of the nation
Chances of making squad:100%
Chances of starting:101%

CROUCH
"Something different" apparently, more like "something average"
Chances of making squad:80%
Chances of starting:10%

DEFOE
Best striker after owen and rooney, not as much of a lock as you might think, needs to get back in the spurs team
Chances of making squad:70%
Chances of starting: 10%

SMITH
Again may get the nod because of verstility, seems to have been forgiven for shunning england in favour of utd. reserves
Chances of making squad:55%
Chances of starting:5%

BENT
May travel but IMHO should ahead of crouch, fast, aerial threat, great finisher, co-ordinated, all things that crouch is not
Chances of making squad:50%
Chances of starting:1%

if i've left anyone out i'm sorry.

I have a few questions

How would you define England's game style with Eriksson?

I've read that Beckham played a game as defensive midfielder. Is this a possibility in the world cup?

Could you describe Wright-Phillips' skills?

Thanks!

Joe Cole should never be dropped from the starting 11. That guy is amazing. You can see the change in England's play the second he came on against Argentina. I think he and Gerrard will be the real key to England - (unless of course Rooney can break out- which he could)

Campbell - I'm a huge fan of this guy - - that's one big scary mofo to face, imo. (just don't let him try and score a header against Argentina -- - sorry--I couldn't resist). Honestely, one of my favorite England defenders.

england's style under eriksson is hard to explain, its not attacking or defensive, its balanced. we have a great defence, maybe the best in the world, then we have great attacking talent in midfield and up front. However not too much feedom is given in central midfield which is the main reason that lampard and gerrard dont play well together, they both want to attack but one has to stay back if we play a flat 4 in midfield.

This is why i think england should play with a holding midfielder,

------------------Robinson

Neville-------Terry--------Campbell------Cole

--------------------King

------Beckham-----Lampard-----Gerrard

---------------Owen------Rooney

would be my ideal team

Beckham did indeed play sa a defensive mid once, but there were circumstances which led to it, namely rooney being suspended. This was before Sven fell in love with Crouch so instead of playing defoe he played a 451 with just owen up front. Beckham played a holding role in the centre, eriksson said Beckham would be the "quarterback" hitting long passes from the middle of the park. Would it be a possibilty in the WC? Only if owen or rooney get injured or suspended

This 451 then allowed wright phillips to play on the right. Wright Phillips is a quality player, the son of arsenal legend ian wright. He plays wide on the right and is a great dribbler of the ball he's fast and will beat most defenders, when he was at man city last season people were calling for beckham to be dropped so he could play, now at chelsea he never really starts and so the fuss has died down. He moved to chelsea to further his career but his hindered it. Incredibly unfortunate for him and ebgland because he is an awesome talent.

I've seen Wright-Phillips play - very exciting player...he is certainly fast as heck! Why doesn't Beck play next to King in the midfield - More of a 4-2-2-2. He can make those very long passes and does an excellent job of distributing the ball. I know Gerrard wouldn't have a problem coming back to defend.

OR

With all the midfield talent that England has, plus the ver experienced defense, why not try a 3-5-2 formation. Hell...if you have the talent - use it. England isn't a squad that needs to sit back.

---------------------Mr. Robinson---------------------

G.Neville--------Rio or Terry-------Campbell--------- A. Cole----

-------------------------King--------------------------

This is the lineup and formation that can win England the Cup....

any thoughts?Replace Ferdinand with Campbell then it's cool :)

2nd team is better in my opinion as we have a holding player.

I also feel that we need a holding player, but is Ledder's the player? I would personally prefer Carrick or Parker tbh.

I like the second team too. It's basically the team I suggested except switch Gerrard and Lampard and you have it.....I like King in the holding position. The 4-4-2 diamond formation is our best option.. Campbell has to be in the game, imo... Terry or Ferdinand in the other spot. whoever is in the better form when it gets W.C. time...

Joe Cole is very talented, but he's not a natural winger, he doesn't have the explosiveness that a player like SWP has, and he's not the greatest crosser of the ball. IMO, England will probably start with Gerrard on the left of the diamond, and Cole will make most of his appearances as a sub.

I hope Gerrard isn't completely worn out by the time the W.C. comes round.

why is crouch in the squad? he's terrible.

Rooney, Owen, Vassel, Defoe are the 4 best english strikers. If crouch makes the squad it will be disasterous for England.

You're right, but Crouch offers a different dimension to what the other four hobbits offer.

haha, yeh he's tall but notice when England play with Crouch they look desperate. Its all long balls into him, no one else can head it if he's in the area. but his movement off the ball is terrible in my oppinion.

Rooney's not exactly short tho. Owne, Defoe... fair enough! but Rooney plays just behind Owen anyway which is perfect to knock on headers into Owen's path. Crouch's goal scoring record aint that good either. I dont knwo how many of you guys rare in England or follow hte Premiership but he's only just got his first goal for Liverpool...and its almost Christmas!!! with Gerrard, Garcia, Alonso etc feeding him he should be on around 6 or 7 at least for a striker who's in the 2nd seed at the WC squad.

I much prefered the days of Shearer and Gazza tho...when was still 9/10/11 years old, eurp 96 squad was immense. Thats pretty much my oldest football memory...USA94 was a blurr  :D
