View Full Version : FSW to broadcast boxing

FSW has been showing ads promoting boxing broadcasts on their channel. The only thing is that there is nothing remotely international about it - it could just as well be on any of their other channels. A fight night from New Orleans doesn't sound very international. Does this mean that FSW is throwing in the towel? I hope not.
Your opinions, please.

I haven't seen the promo, so I can't really say, but I don't think boxing would be any less "international" than the US Open Cup or the A-League.
Personally, I'd rather see boxing than rugby.
But maybe that's just me.

Awesome news. When are they gonna start broadcasting the sweet science?

Looks like the sweet science begins the night of Tuesday the 14th at 11PM Pacific.

Nice.
Is it gonna be fights from England only or just most of them?

Wait a second! My concern is that they are moving away from the international stuff and will become just another sports network. Is this development an indication that they are losing money on FSW? I hope that it stays with the international programming. Also, WHAT is wrong with rugby?!!

First, the easy question. What's wrong with rugby? The game's S-L-O-W. Every time a player's tackled, it takes the better part of a minute before the ball starts moving again. It's like the NFL but with more time between plays and no forward passing.
I don't mean to offend any rugby afficionados out there - I'm sure you love your sport. But I've tried to get into rugby on multiple occasions, and have just ended up really bored. I just don't like it. But your mileage may vary.
Now, as for the sky falling on FSW, I really wouldn't worry about it. Outside of soccer, basketball, and maybe auto racing, I can't think of another sport that's more international than boxing. It's not like they're dropping the Bundesliga or the EPL. It's a two-hour time slot at 2AM on a Tuesday night.
And last I heard, FSW was very close to turning a profit.

Exactly. I can't think of why anyone would consider boxing a strictly "American" sport. It's about as international as you get.

Or have them broadcast hockey so you can watch both...

If it helps them make money so they can show more soccer, I'm all for it.
Re: Rugby. I can't watch a whole Rugby match, either. But I love watching the higlights. Much better than NFL highlights.
What's the source for the "FSW is close making a profit" stuff? My world would crumble if it went belly-up.

You guys must be talking about rugby league and not rugby union. Besides, I like having rugby on. There are two teams in my town, and most of the guys got FSW for rugby, not soccer, which means if my Cable-System-Formerly-Known-As AT&T drops FSW, it won't be just me and one other soccer fan calling them about it: there'll be 40 others.
Secondly, I haven't seen the promos, either. How often are they showing boxing?
Thirdly, thanks for not bitching about the upcoming Caribbean World Series. For now.
Edit: nevermind: I just saw the timeslot. They must've lost their darts contract.

There was a discussion about this pre-hack, but it's gone now. So I don't have any links or anything.
But the word on the street was FSW could maybe turn a profit in 2002. Maybe.
Regardless of what actually happened, if the word on the street was based in fact, FSW is clearly close enough to breaking even that we don't have to worry about its future.

FSW is running promos thanking their audience for making it one of the ten most requested digital cable channels in the country, or words to that effect. I think they know which side their bread's buttered on.
I'd love to see some of the Caribbean World Series. It made someone's list of the best-kept secrets in sports a few years ago. But then again, I'm not one of the people who has a bug up his ass about every sport that's not soccer. (Even so, I don't care too much for rugby, either.)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T LIKE RUGBY!!! (;))
Anyway, the CWS is pretty interesting and worth a look if you like baseball. There was an female announcer last time whose accent was thicker than Veronica Payse's, but who was funnier than all hell. "This guy can't hit a curve ball. He's out on this pitch." Silence. Strike Three. "I toll choo!"

But maybe that's just me. I agree. What,s up with that Ruby, it is just as bad as American Football and Baseball.

The addition of a new sport on FSW shouldn't be viewed as a threat to soccer on the network. FSW needs more original programming and that is especially clear when the European soccer leagues are on break. The only thing adding boxing will do is widen the number of people the channel will appeal to and that's a great thing for soccer fans. More people who otherwise wouldn't care about the channel will be calling their cable company asking for FSW if they don't already have it. Boxing should help bring in more advertisers and as long as FSW doesn't become the boxing channel I think it's fantastic news for all soccer fans.

Isn't the current heavyweight champion of the world from Britain? What about Max Baer...I'm pretty sure he was European :) I think boxing does have quite an international appeal.
Fox Sports World tends to have many hours of paid programming and repeats most programs 3 or 4 times a week. As long as they don't cut down on original programming (just repeats of previously aired programs), I'm in favor of this.

I would rather that they show more AMERICAN (or even CANADIAN) rugby instead of another league from South Africa or Australia. That got boring.
Now if they can get a boxer to tatoo the FSW logo on his back....

Boxing on FSW is great news. I have been thinking of upgrading to digital cable for the sole purpose of getting FSW and this will prbably make me do it. A whole channel of soccer and boxing sounds perfect to me. Although I may never leave my house.
There is an article on Fightnews about this. The fight series is basically from one promoter - Kingfish. quote:
"Monday’s action-packed card is Goodman’s first of the year and the first of 24 shows set to be televised on Fox Sports World and Fox Sports En Espanol. Shows will be bi-monthly and most will air from the Pontchartrain Center and Lafayette, La. "

Now with boxing starting on the new HBO Latino and also NBC rumored to broadcast a fight series. (Although Vargas testing positive for steriods may have delayed that since he was going to be one of their marquee fighters) There is going to be a ton of fights on TV this year.
Fox Sports NET has always broadcast fights so it is no suprise for FSW to do so as well. Hopefully it will be the same broadcast team of Marotta and Thompkins

I welcome this type of broadcast....
If FSW is to be the "World Sports Network" then
yes... Boxing should be right next to football...
I wish they would be like USA Tuesday Night Fights
were... high class up and coming talent..shown
on the US domestic stage.... USA had some of the
best Tyson fights ever.....
the Sunday night fox broadcasts have been very
dull... showing tape delayed broadcast's of none
more than mediocre fighters......
Maybe this will be an awakening for Fox... a new
niche market..... Showtime has done well with
Showbox...
whatever keeps the channel going...its fine by me..
but FSW has got to get rid of Bretos and Hopkins
in the boothe... save your money.. use the
home broadcast feeds...
