if you look around the world, each league and tournament has it's own distinctive style of play.

A perfect example was Liverpool being succesful in Champion's League, but not in England last season. They had a style of play that suited the European tournament better than their domestic league.

So what is the World Cup style of play?

If you look at 2002, I think that style was based upon pace and fitness.

Check out the final 8.

Brazil
England
Senegal
USA
Germany
Turkey
South Korea
Spain

USA (Portugal, Mexico), South Korea (Portugal, Italy), England (Argentina), and Senegal (France, Sweden) all defeated sides that had more skill and flair then they did. And they were all able to do so because they were the more athletic and fitter sides.

Brazil was a side that was the best in the world because they were so sucesful in fusing their athletecism with their skill - the only side to do so IMHO.

So whats going to mark 2006's world cup?

England won against Argentina as they had better defensive organisation and a sharper striker who won the penalty. Fitness and athleticism wasn't a factor, if anything England's lack of fitness nearly cost them.

Senegal beat Sweden as they had more attacking flair. Sweden didn't really create anything and Senegal always looked like making something happen.

Mustache's with a slight flare of alcoholic perversion.

Don't worry after a few steins she'll come around to seeing the advantage of the mustache.
