A-level is the highest level of school.
English Skool System
High School
*Year (grade) 9 = Nothing Age=14
*Year 10 = 1st GCSE year (no exams) Age=15
*Year 11 = 2nd GCSE year (exams) Age=16you can leave skool after this. Pass atleast 5 GCSE's and you can enter your A-levels and 6th form (I got 10 our of 11)
*Year 12 = 1st A-level Year (6th form) (as-level exams)Age=17 as-level =1/2 an A-level
*Year 13 = 2nd A-level Year (6th form) (a-level exams)Age=18 A-Level grades are graded in a points system and this is used to entry to university. The more a-levels and better grades you get the more points and so the better the course you can get on to.

Yep 2nd year because I took 2 years out to bum around europe and work.
You can take between 2 and 5 A-levels although most people only take 3 because you have to be some kind of machine with no life at all to be able to all the work for 4 or 5.
I'm done with my a-levels forever thank god. My university life goes like this.
Coursework in winter for every module and Coursework in summer for every module and also 2 exams each for the 3 main modules.

Oh i forgot to add the SATS we take in Year 9 which are basically aptitude test to see what level of GCSE we will be taking.
I've tested every single year from the age of 12 and each exam had consiquences....I'm planning my nervous breakdown for about age 27.

By module, I assume you mean class. How many modules do you take at one time? And what's with all the tests? Can't someone explain to the English that you can't measure everything a person knows with tests?
Did the fiance ever make it back from whereever she was to make sure you did all of your work? ;) :D

I know I now hate tests with a passion. I'm just lucky that I'm good at exams or I just got lucky.
This semester I'm taking 6 modules, I drop 3 and pick up 3 for semester 3.
Yes she got back for Portugal on Thursday and she's in bed thinking I'm doing work but I'm really on here and watching the highlights from the Redskins vs Bucs game.

So am I to assume that in England everything you take in university is focused on your major or concentration, and that there is no time for "experimentation" or "finding out what you want to do" like in America.

Well the 1st year doesn't really count so you can drop out and start another course if you want. But yes the courses are extremely focused on the subject you have chosen.

Are you going into the business world, or perhaps construction, or both?

Hey Graeme, are politics taboo on this board? I forget the taboo subjects (e.g. racist remarks).

I'll be going into the management side of the Construction Industry. Once I've finished my current course I'll do a post-grad degree in structural engineering and then waltz into lovely upper-mid level position in a big company and begin my long hard struggle for the boardroom, where my dad and uncle are.

Racisim, gaybashing and all general outright abuse is banned.
No subject is banned unless it crosses those lines or is an inapporiate subject (e.g kiddy porn isn't that bad)
