as expected...
Germany, Brazil, Italy, France, Argentina, Spain, Mexico and England were named as the top eight seeds for next year's World Cup finals by FIFA on Tuesday.
The decision was taken by the World Cup Organising Committee. The draw for the finals takes place in Leipzig on Friday starting at 2030 (1930 GMT).

Fifa needs to re-think their seeding process if Mexico is seeded ahead of Holland and the US.

As stated, no real shock, but interesting to see we will have an opportunity to play an African team, Australia, or South American team as opposed to an Asian team. True BS reaction will be based on our drawing from Pool 3.
BS positive reaction: Croatia, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine
BS negative reaction: Portugal, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Sweden
That said, any of the first group can pose a real challenge as well.

Interesting quote from this BBC article:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/4356050.stm
"Under the seeding system used by Fifa, England came out second to Brazil while Italy narrowly beat the US into eighth."

"Special pot"? Is that really necessary? They're in Pot 4 but must go into a Brazil / Argentina / Mexico group.

Maybe some of the stats guys can figure out the seeding system based on the England/Italy/US info above?

The nightmare scenario would see us in the same group as Holland. That plus
the top seed =

Turns out they only used 1998 and 2002 World Cup results. We JUST missed out.

Soccernet has the points totals posted.
Under the seedings system Brazil have 64 points followed by England (51), Spain (50), Germany (48), Mexico (47), France (46), Argentina (44) and Italy (44). The USA had 43 points and Holland 38.
Kind of depressing to see we were so close.

Totally.
But if we do well again in this World Cup, maybe we can grab a seed for 2010.

I think the seeded is based on how the team play in addition to where the countries are located, we finished in the last 8 last time around but, let's face it, we didn't play that good until quarterfinal against Germany. We drew Korea and lost to Poland and a little bit lucky of going to the second round but, i think we are a better team than before now and we will beat the seeded team in our group.

Thank you, Steve Sampson.
I must admit, with only one point separating Italy and Argentina from us, would victories in the games after we clinched have affected our FIFA ranking enough to get us there. Now, FIFA was so secretive about the formula, there was no way we could have known. Also, there is merit to resting some of your top players as the soccer season in Europe will be particularlly long for some. Still, it does make me wonder, and I wish FIFA was more transparent about these things. Shoot, it might make the last qualifying matches more interesting as well, as teams will also be competing for seeding if the formula was made public beforehand.

Wow. I've been up all night writing two papers, so naturally I'm in a cheery mood, and now the Mexicans get seeded and not us?! What a way to start the day.

Just out of curiosity... is it possible for us to draw Serbia & Montenegro or are they considered the 8th team in Pool Four - thus avoiding the other 7 teams in the pool?

I would assume since the other pots all have eight teams, they are essentially in our pot and we cannot play them. Anyone else?
