The high technology "smart ball" that will help officials on close calls around the goal won't be ready for use at next year's World Cup soccer finals.

Okay it was the final, but 1966? AP couldn't come up with a few more recent examples?

This almost guarantees an "incident" for WC 2006.

Better to guarantee an incident based on old-fashioned eyesight, than one based on an unproven technology. What kind of controversy do you think would ensue when everyone saw the ball completely over the line in the goal, but the siren and flashing lights didn't go off?

the match rigging fifa prefers gets blurred if tech gets used...

any one really believe south korea was just fortunate to get a ton of pitiful refs make calls their way...

or was it the south korean people weren't going to any NON-SK match so to make money, keeping the republic in the tourney was desired

And if the ball clearly goes in, it is a goal. It isn't like this tiny piece of equipment instantly makes refs helpless babies.

Or are you also against the watches that refs have as well?

an incident is not worth it....even a replay system.... let the teams play fair and refs stick to there desicions....

The Internet and wristwatches are proven technology - they work to the level we expect them to. (Burned out batteries notwithstanding.)

The smart ball has not yet been proven to work - they haven't had enough experience with it yet. It must be used in hundreds, maybe even thousands, of lower-level matches to prove it works every time it needs to. That's because a close decision just doesn't happen that often. Which is exactly what FIFA is proposing to do - continue testing it before making a decision.

Now how in the world does that make me a Luddite? Other than the fact that I agree with FIFA in this case, which may be ipso facto proof.

I dont know about you, but I wouldn't fancy losing in extra time on a replay or some technological blurb. It has its advantages, but it takes away from the sports 'ancient feeling'

yes yes everyone know what terrible mistake fifa made in trying to help korea get far into the world cup, they embarrsed themselves, and it wont happen again, though i could see something going against brazil all beacause fifa don't want brazil to win a 6th title,

No.. Everyone doesn't believe those crazy conspiracy theories that say FIFA got together with the refs and told them they had to help Korea and tell no one about it even on their death beds...
I guess they paid off the Italians who missed the sitters too... ;)
Crazy stuff... Or can you give us a scenario of how FIFA pulled it off knowing that if one person didn't go along or didn't like the idea that knew about it it would be the biggest scandal in the history of the sport and everyone of them would die in shame?

I guess Septic Bladder couldn't live with the fact that the new balls are smarter than him...

Yes thats ridiculous, anyway, everyone knows that this time around they are putting a big magnet inside the ball not a microchip, and there will be a brazillian in a blimp over head with another magnet controlling it

so obvious
