I don't know much about getting tickets - maybe chifirefan can help you better than me.
I do know that getting derby tickets this late in the game is damn near impossible.

the best place to sit is the Park End...as there are no obstructions. the main stand is okay, but look out for the pillers that might block some of the pitch. i had a season ticket in the upper bullens, same problem as the main stand. the gwladys street is great for atmosphere.
basically, the seat you got should be fine. hope your friend enjoys the match.

Has Everton looked into gradually modernising Goodison?

what do you mean monderinze? you mean wooden stands and splintery seats aren't modern?
well, there was talk of a king's dock super stadium, but our financing fell through (go figure) and then the possibilty of a ground share with the shite (i hope that doesn't ever happen) but, it's more than likely what will happen is that goodison will get modernized very slowly over a very long period of time. we just don't have the money for it.

More than likely the only change that will happen is that thell put plastic seast where the wooden benches are. The best stand to sit is the Glawdy's street end, its where most of the die hard fans are and is probabily the best way to enjoy the atmosphere of the game and learn the chants.
