Way to go Kasey! The way he body-slammed that 'gladbach mascot had to be the deciding factor in winning this award. Let's see LD or DMB try that! ;)

What????!!!!! Landon was robbed!!!!
:D :D
*At least he wins a truck. He'd have looked pretty silly tooling around Germany in a little Honda Civic.

Is Kasey the only American soccer player ever immortalized in song?

EXCELLENT!!!
Love Donovan but he was a bit inconsistent for club (sans MLS playoffs) & country, at times in 2005.
Keller deserved & earned it IMHO, especially in the CR WCQ in June in SLC!!
Congrats, Kasey!!!

Am I the only one who wonders how DMB finished a distant 3rd behind LD?
Seems as if DMB had the more impressive year in Europe and ahd more consistent year for the Nats?
congrats to KK anyway. He deserved it.

Excellent.
He's been my favorite for many years.
I voted for him last night on US Soccer. com poll.
He has really carried the team through qualifying.
Congrats to Kasey Keller on a well-deserved honor.

SportsCenter (on the replay i saw this morning) had Keller shown briefly in their opening montage.
and then in the last 10 minutes of the show (close to the top plays segment) they did an actually 7-15 seconds (i wasn't counting) on Keller winning the award with some quick highlights of saves during qualifying. There was the mention that Landon Donovan had a strangle-hold on the award for the previous 3 years.
then the host made the quick, under-his-breath, non-funny comment that he had Keller in the pool.
i was glad to see a bit of USMNT coverage on SportsCenter. ESPN must be the WC carrier in 2006 and beyond, or something like that.

No, you are not the only one. I think that in some of the bigger games where LD has disappeared (Mexico in Columbus comes to mind) Beas has been the one to pick up his slack. He rarely has an off day, and is playing for one of the best teams in Europe.
KK deserves the award for the Costa Rica match alone, but no way DMB is that far behind Cakes.

i don't know if distant 3rd is the right way to classify the results for DMB. i'm not sure how the voting point system works.
Keller won the Honda Award on Wednesday as the best player on the U.S. national team, adding it to the trophy he earned in 1999.
so DMB's success/exploits with PSV don't factor in to the USMNT award. and I'm not so sure about the case the DMB had a more consistent year with the USMNT than LD did.
and it actually seemed like the three finalists all did quite well in the voting, and Keller just came out, deservedly so, with the most voting points.
Landon Donovan, who won the past three years, and DaMarcus Beasley were the other finalists. Keller received 344 points in voting by 206 sports journalists nationwide, while Donovan got 329 and Beasley 270.
"He's totally deserving. I would have been a little embarrassed if he hadn't won," said the 23-year-old Donovan, who played this season for the Major League Soccer champion Los Angeles Galaxy.
no, i'm not surprised that 206 sports journalists nationwide would vote for LD more than they would for DMB. what do those jokers know? and Landon did have a very solid year in qualifying. yes DMB did too, and he's had success in Europe, but for the national team, I have no problem with the final ranking of KK, LD, then DMB for 2005. again, this is just voting by journalists and i'm not certain that Beasely really finished all that far behind Donovan.
is it a weighted scoring system, where the 206 journalists' votes give 3 points for 1st place, 2 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd? I don't know. but with 943 total vote points earned by the finalists, it is an average of 4.58 vote points cast by the 206 journalists. would be interesting to see a breakdown of the votes cast, in addition to the final points tally.
very glad Kasey took the honor again, as he is clearly deserving. at least those voters got the winner correct.
I also thought it was great the Keller flew into LA from Germany to accept the award.
I wonder who will win the 2006 award.

The award is given for MNT performance only. So you can throw out all that DaMarcus has done in Eredivise and all that Donovan did in MLS. When you look at the poll, it was voted by a panel of 206 American sports writers. I don't think all 206 of them really know all about the MNT, so *perhaps* there were a few lazy writers around who didn't do their homework and gave the vote to Donovan because of how he's touted around by MLS. That being said, a sportswriter who knows nothing about soccer is then only going to look at numbers ... Donovan --> 6 goals, 6 assists, 15 matches. Beasley --> 4 goals, 4 assists, 12 matches. Clearly, by the numbers, Donovan has the edge.
But back to topic, Kasey Keller is truly deserving of the award as he put in a monster string of shutout minutes to help us qualify. I'm excited to watch him lead the MNT to glory in Germany. :)
