No, im not talking about wireless routers...

does anyone know if a device exists that you could plug into two devices, say, an external hard drive and a computer, which replaces the actual USB cord and makes the connection between the two wireless? does such a thing exist?

You can use bluetooth. My boss used bluetooth to print from his laptop to his printer. I only know the basics of how it works so someone else could surely give you a more detailed answer than I can.

It's basically transmits info wirelessly. The one super market I go to, they have BT scan guns..very cool. If there's ever a bar code missing, the manager can get the scan gun and scan the good right off the shelf. Seems kinda pointless, but if you're dealing with dog food, plants, etc, it quite handy.
