I couldn't resist the opportunity to pass this along. Not news to anyone here, but Henry's stance against racism in European football is just one more reason he is class! The article below was posted on cnnsi.com and was not necessarily intended to be read exclusively by its soccer audience.

Before the crumudgeons appear on this thread to link Henry's anti-racism campaign with Nike's coffers, I'd like to say: Bravo. TH has grapefruits like Ali had grapefruits.

It is sad that racism is an issue in the 21st century in supposedly modern western cultures. Kudos to Henry and all he has and continues to do to knock it out. And if Nike wants to help (even for their own benefit), let them.

society is at a sad state right now.
when, do tell, was society in a better state? in the good ol' days when Michael Jordan wouldn't endorse a black man from his own state for office against a known racist because "republicans buy shoes too."
at least someone is trying to make things better.

DaMarcus Beasley, the U.S. national player who plays for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, told SI.com in October that "racism exists in soccer. It sucks but it does. It's weird: You have guys on your team that are African-American and you are booing me."
Plays against a lot of teams featuring African-Americans, does he?

One of Messina's defenders, Zoro, who's from the Ivory Coast, did probably the ballsiest thing I've seen last weekend. After he'd been jeered by the visiting Inter supporters the whole match, he picked the ball up and walked toward the fourth official. He was eventually convinced to keep playing, but it sparked Serie A officials to delay the start of all matches by five minutes for anti-racism demonstrations by the players. You have to applaud the guy for taking a stand.

Isn't it also sad that it exists in non-western cultures? Or should we expect those heathens to be backwards-thinking?
:p :D
(someone please give me rep for using "heathens" instead of "mud people" because I was really really tempted but I want to make sure I stay on Santa's "nice" list)

I don't think anyone that supports Arsenal and Henry thinks that he is just a footballer......he is class and I thought this before he started his Stand Up Speak Up campaign. Glad to see that Henry and through him his campaign are getting more coverage.
I know who I'll be voting for as Sportsman of the Year. :)

American media automatically switch black to African-American without checking if it meant the same in the given context.

It is sad that any culture thinks that way, but the point I was making is that these western societies that think of themselves as progressive and leaders in culture take giant leaps backwards with racist attitudes.

May i ask how Lampard got on the World player of the year list instead of Henry?
There is no doubt he is a good player, but he does play in a midfield that covers and defends for him so he can attack.
Henry drives the Arsenal team, and is.....well you all know about Henry.
I wouldn't swap Henry for Eto'o, or Lampard. The only other player on that list deserves it more than Henry is Ronaldinho?

Perhaps you should look on a map to find Surinam...
At any rate, aloisius's post is correct.

Okay, I'll bite.
What does Surinam have to do with the topic at hand?

I'm guessing he's referring to the large number of Dutch players who are from Surinam, which of course is in South America. Sort of a technicality though. Somehow I doubt that Edgar Davids thinks of himself as African-American.
