I didn't know where to put this so I figured this was as good as any.
This weekend the window on my backdoor shattered. Does anyone have any tips/advice on replacing it yourself? Or cheaply getting it done otherwise?
Thanks in advance

Was there molding holding the window in?
If so.. remove that..((very carefully, so you can salvage it!)) and try and get a measurement of the piece of glass...Take your measurement to local hardware store and see if they can cut a piece of glass. Pop it back in..replace molding...
Dont know if that helps?

I assume it's single pane? If so, you could indeed get a piece from the hardware store, but it's no better than an open hole when it comes to insulation value. They will cut it for you, but in my experience the cuts made at some place like Lowes aren't exactly very good. I had better luck cutting the glass myself with an etching wheel (takes a little practice, and wear safety glasses, unless you don't like your eyes - glass shards will fly).
You might have better luck at a glass shop - they might be able to get you better glass and a more precise cut, even if you install it yourself.

Some hardware stores have pre-cut glass for standard size panes, too. So you might try getting some measurements and then letting your fingers do the walking.
I don't know how cold it is in Philly right now, but if glazing is necessary (in an old fashioned door) you might have to wait until it gets warmer to finish the job. If you have a door that old, though, you might want to consider buying a new one and just bypass the glass replacement.

you can use a hair dryer or, better yet, a heat gun. you can probably get instructions at www.thisoldhouse.com.

You're right. However I'd rather eat sh!t than glaze a window so if it's up to me any old excuse will do for a wait.

Anger management classes, maybe? ;)
Easy as others already said.
Couldn't you add some caulking around the edges before putting the moulding back?

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I really appreciate the fact that you took your time to help me out. I was real busy last week with job interviews so I haven't had much time to check this. In the end I just called up "The Glass Doctor" and had them do it for $150.
1) My roommates were pissed about it and I needed to get it done ASAP.
2) I don't trust myself in handling glass.
3) Like I said, real busy with interviews. Didn't have the time or energy.
4) My brother broke it, he paid for it.
:)
