The 2005 Francophone Games will be an U20 competition. In 2001 (at Ottawa) they were for U23 teams.

Canada will arrive in Morocco for training on November 26th. The quality of soccer is decent... at least in 2001. The French team in 2001 had a number of professionals - many of whom are playing in the first division this year. Although, Bulgaria sent scrubs from the lower divisions.

Should be an interesting tournament. Canada won the gold medal in 1989 (Morocco) and 1997 in Madagascar. I remember watching highlights of Canada playing during the 1997 competition.

i assume the strong presence of NCAA players is due to the season having just finished/finishing...

Yes, and the fact that most our players on 'pro' clubs wouldn't have been released for this tournament.

I wonder why Will Johnson wasn't included? He's off-season because of MLS's schedule, and he's a pretty good 87 that I guess will be one of your starting forwards in WYC 2007 Qualifying.

I think you're right and that he'll start in 07, but he made it to the UK tour, while D'Agostino (who played in the 05 qualifying but didn't make the final roster) and Elliott did not and I think both are near the top of the list for the bench spots up front (behind Lombardo another 05 vet). Di Ioia's definitely in that mix too (as are a couple of forwards who were in England for the tour). I think it's just a matter of seeing more players and given the fact Johnson's a near lock for the 07 team and just got his first senior cap, the Francophone Games is down the priority list a bit.

cheers,

He may also be in Europe training with a foreign club team as many MLS players do in the off season...

FYI - Canada, as host will not be taking part in Qualifying :)

He very well could be training with a club in England.

Canada lost their opening game to a strong Cameroon side 5-0. Cameroon called in 6-pro players but I don't know how many showed up. I know one of the players who is with Anderlecht is playing.

Anyway, if Canada beats Niger tomorrow they will probably make it to the next round as Lithuania and Congo didn't show up for the tournament. This means two third place teams make it to the next round (I think).

Sounds like Cameroon and the hosts Niger took this competition alot more seriously then the CSA did...Can we really be that surprised that a predominantly U18 team of college players got their butts handed to them?

Yes, they struggled, but I except our 2007 U20 team to look vastly different from this one. I suspect that there might be a handful of players who would make it on to the final U20 team.

At least we now know which players who might not be up to the international level at this point in their careers.
