Hey, I was wondering if someone can tell me about the cost of living in Perú (specifically Lima.)

How much would you estimate it costs to live a year? I'm talking about a lifestyle somewhere between luxurious and poor. Maybe a very small apartment in a half-decent neighborhood and saving money wherever possible.

What about travel (bus, air) to nearby countries?

Do you know anything about the universities and Spanish-language classes?

How does it compare to other South American countries? Since Bolivia is the poorest nation I'd imagine it is the cheapest and I've also heard Asunción, Paraguay is one of the least expensive major cities in the world.

Most importantly, how much is a ticket to see Alianza, Universitario or Sporting Cristal? :D

Is this generally accurate? http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/south-america/peru/money

Sorry for so many questions, any help is appreciated.

I'm sure someonethere are plenty willing to help you. I don't know much about the subject matter, but let me see...

Lima is a city of contrast, between poor, and rich, colonial, and modern. One thing to notice, is the declining number of "middle-class". Might as well go for upper-middle class. Tickets to go watch games aren't all that expensive, ask Condor, he should have accurate numbers, because he just watched a S.Cristal game.

No worries there. At this rate it won't be long before there's no middle class in the US either. I might as well get used to a Third World two-tiered economy. :(

I don't mind living in a rough area as long as it's something more upscale than a mud hut in a war zone. :)

Condor (or anyone else), does US$12 for a ticket sound about right? Would that be for the most expensive seats or the cheap seats behind the goals?

Well, the tickets for this weekend's Clasico (Derby) are between 10 and 40 soles. So Im guessing the cheap seats are 10 soles and the good seats are between the 20 and 40 soles range. Thats not bad at all considering its a Clasico.

Those prices are about right. Lima is very cheap. After Bolivia, Paraguay and maaaaaybe Ecuador, Peru is the poorest country in South America.

In middle and working-class neighborhoods you can get a menú (a bowl of soup, entree and a drink) for $1, sometimes even less. Yes $1. And the food is damn good too.

A decent apartment will cost you around $100 monthly.

And $10 will get you one of the best seats in the stadium. Don't go for the $2-$3 (5-10 soles) sections behind the goals cuz that's where the hoodlum supporters of each team sit.

I'd say you can make it with $200-$500 a month, depending on how much partying/drinking you do and where.

15 bucks should get you a ticket in occidente or oriente as it changes roughly to 45 soles

Well I've heard la UNI is super hard to get into and if you're not into engineering it's pretty useless to you right?

But I guess it is one of the best known.

Did anyone check out the pituquitos in the U de Lima site? They're so cute!

If you want universities or futbol, then Lima is it, but there are many nicer places to live in Peru, and they are even cheaper.

True, provincias are so much quieter and cleaner.

But personally, I love the chaos of Lima. Nothing like breathing car smoke, smelling pollo a la brasa as you watch a choro look for his next punto. Oh, and the complete lack of sunlight too.

Condor, it's http://www.ulima.edu.pe

thanks

talking about chaos...saw the most horrible thing yesterday

was visiting a cousin in la Catolica and as i go out i see a bunch of people in the corner

apparently a Bus was going to fast and two idiots jumped in front of it to cross the road(la Bolivar)

the bus goes off the road to avoid them, but since its going to fast it cannot stop and it smashes into a phoneboth, killing the poor guy making a call and the guy that was waiting in line

truly in Lima road rules are non existant
