Ten matches were played in group D, five of those ended 0-0. By comparison, the rest of CL played 4 times without goals in 62 matches...

All but 1 of 8 goals scored in the group were in Benfica games...

Villareal is 3rd in goals scored in the Spanish league, Lille is 2nd in France, Man U is 2nd in England, and Benfica is 1st in Portugal...

Do any of you astute football followers have any ideas why teams that usually score many goals have such long dry spells in the champions lague??

I only saw the Manu-Villareal match. They played as if they do not have a striker on field.

Teams tend to change their style of play just for the CL, where ur only guranteed 6 games, points tend to be crucial so teams will play more defensive then they normally would in their own league

Villareal and Lille have very stingy defences!

Lille has scored 1 goal and conceided 1 goal in 5 matches, that's quite (non)-spectacular ...

But the games aren't all boring, eg Lille-ManU was fun to watch

The game should open up in the last week of the 1st round.

The problem is Lille has played Greek-style anti-football. The others have canceled themselves out. Bound to happen in the Group of Death at some point.

I don't think so… Villarreal only need a point to go through and they're playing Lille, the stingiest team in CL this season. One would think that Villarreal will be more prolific with Riquelme on the field, though.

0.8 goal average in this group is appaling (I didn't need a calculator for that, either). The first post says that 7 of the 8 goals in this group were in Benfica's matches. Yet Benfica are last in the group.

well in terms of goals scored it is boring but interms of who will go through it couldnt be more exciting. all 4 of the teams can go through with only 1 game each left.

This is actually the most exciting group of them all, IMO. I mean, it quickly get's old seeing the likes of Bayern, Juve, Barca and Lyon steamroll mediocre european teams like Madrid, Panathinaikos and Vienna. When Barca use Gabri (!) as playmaker (as yesterday against Bremen), you know the games aren't competitive anymore, and then I'd prefer watching United - Villarreal, which actually was a close and exciting game eventhough it was scoreless. Football is not only about goals, you know...

Maybe D is the most boring but it's certainly an exciting last day.

Group B is by far the worst

Arsenal, ok side but the worst of the eight seeds
Ajax, hopeless out of form in any other group probably rock bottom :)
Prague, see Ajax
Thun, name one player

But im not complaining

Well of course the last round will be interesting if nobody scores...I was just wondering why teams who do great offensively in their own leagues have so much trouble to score here...and I dont buy that they play a more defensive kind of football in CL because in other groups only 4 out of 70 games ended 0-0 (i love numbers, cant help myself :) )

Yes, Group D was the worst ever.

Spoonman, I'll name a Thun player. Ljubo Milicevic.

No disrepect intended to Thun (they should've gotten at least one draw from us) but I ask on 23 november to name one player and finally on 13 december somebody comes up with something.

It was the mosat boring actually. Watching Man Utd - Lille and Man Utd - Villarreal proves this to me...

Like I said previously, the problem was certain teams playing 1-10-0 formations.
