Caetano Veloso.

Chico Buarque has been a favorite for a long time, but Caetano Veloso is even better IMHO.

I also am a huge Jorge Ben Jor fan.

Antonio Carlos Jobim or Gilberto.

As for song writers, I dont really know. Alot of songs I once thought were original just turned out to be classics.

João Gilberto. My girlfriend is in love with Chico Buarque, so my jealousy clouds my judgement there ;)

Hello~

i'm relatively new into actually listening to Brasilian music but a friend of mine let me hear Zeca Pagodinho on his iPod and i got to like it

So... i suppose my favourite so far is Zeca

i especially like the song Deixa Me Vida A Levar... Great lyrics and it was a song that the Seleçao apparently sung after they got the Penta :)

Tchau~

A bundle (not necessarily in order): Chico, Gil, Jorge Ben Jor, Veloso, Vinicius, Cazuza and the most underestimated of them all, the great Tom Zé. Regarding bands, a almost forgotten genius supergroup, A Cor do Som.

Carlinhos Brown

Yes yes. Carlinhos Brown. Mines too. I saw him live at Bahia carnaval, and that whole Barra/Ondina district of Salvador was jumping. Maria Caparinha is my song.

Gal Costa is also awesome. I'm in love with her.

This is a beautiful love song.

I was trying to translate it for a friend of mine. With my limited Portuguese, I couldn't do it directly to English, so I took it from Portuguese to Spanish and then to English. Is this about right?

Eu preciso te falar
Te encontrar de qualquer jeito
Pra sentar e conversar
Depois andar de encontro ao vento
Eu preciso respirar
O mesmo ar que te rodeia
E na pele quero ter
O mesmo sol que te bronzeia
Eu preciso te tocar
E outra vez te ver sorrindo
E voltar num sonho lindo
Já não dá mais pra viver
Um sentimento sem sentido
Eu preciso descobrir
A emoção de estar contigo
Ver o sol amanhecer
E ver a vida acontecer
Como um dia de domingo
Faz de conta que ainda é cedo
Tudo vai ficar por conta da emoção
Faz de conta que ainda é cedo
E deixar falar a voz do coração

Spanish:
Necesito hablar con vos
Encontrarte en cualquier parte
Sentarnos a conversar
Despues andar contra el viento
Necesito respirar
El mismo aire que te rodea
En mi piel quiero tener
El mismo sol que te bronzea
Necesito tocarte
Y otra vez verte sonreir
Y tener un sueno lindo
Ya no quiero vivir mas
Un sentimiento sin sentido
Necesito descubrir
La emocion de estar contigo
Ver el sol amanecer
Y ver la vida acontecer
Como un dia de domingo
Hacer de cuenta que aun es temprano
Y dejarlo todo a la emocion
Hacer de cuenta que aun es temprano
Y dejar hablar la voz del corazon

English:
I need to speak with you
To find you anywhere
To sit down and talk
Then to walk against the wind
I need to breathe
The same air that surrounds you
And in my skin I need to feel
The same sun that tans you
I need to touch you
And to see you smile again
And to have a beautiful dream
I cannot live anymore
With a meaningless feeling
I need to discover
The emotion of being with you
Watch the sun rise
And watch life happen
As on a Sunday
Lets pretend that it is still early
And leave everything to the emotions
Lets pretend that it is still early
And let the voice of the heart speak

You can get a little of both worlds... Gal Costa with Caetano Veloso when they sang the duet "Sorte". It's been done over a lot but it's still a classic.

Speaking of classics... I definitely like Luiz Bonfa and Laurindo Almeida. Beautiful guitar play is what I go for. I also like Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle. The woman likes Ana Carolina & Marisa Monte! :D Zeca's also a good one. For classic divas, I like Elis Regina, Gal Costa and Ana Mazzotti & Claudia. But damned hard to find some of Claudia's old stuff. The way she sang "Gosto De Ser Como Sou" is amazing. But I own more "Joyce" albums than anyone else. Mosko's also got some good stuff too that I listen too often.

For a real, powerful voice in the cabaret sort of style, check out Salome De Bahia though. She'll blow you away. But... I can't talk too much about the music because then I ramble on for 6-7 years. :D

Leaning more towards the musical side but how could anyone possibly leave out one of the greatest pianists to ever walk the universe - Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim.

The man invented his own style. The late great Argentine pianist Jorge Dalto grew up wishing to emulate this guy, so did yours truly. He was a magician.

For me it has to be Caetano Veloso. The guy is simply a genius, and has been great for so long. In the US he is described as a "South American Bob Dylan," but his musical compositions are so complex and original and fun there's really no comparison. His book, Tropical Truths, is fascinating and I don't know of anyone else who has weaved such great music and politics together. Veloso's music is great on multiple levels.

Lately, I have enjoyed Seu Jorge (his 2006 perfromance in Chicago's Millenium Park was spellbinding) and Bossacucanova (good music, really nice people).
