You guys didnt deserve it though in my opinion. ITaly was absolutly dominating until 15 mins to go. You guys were lucky you guys got that PK vs. Portugal . I would rather play Portugal in the final than France that year. bu whatever history is done and it cannot be changed, consider yourself lucky that time as both of our teams are being heavily critisized

Hmmmm... That is funny coming from a team that played some of the most negative football in the history of the tournament. Speaking of teams that didn't deserve the final, you must have forgotten the 3 posts the Dutch hit against you in the semi-final, outshooting you something like 25 to 3.........

Would a should a..... deserved..... bah@!@$#

You deserve what you get in life, and when the Italian bench got up in the 92nd minute to applaud their fans and take in their victory, they DESERVED a Sylvain Wiltord equalizer for disprespecting a world class side.

You don't celebrate victories before the game is over, especially when classy players like Blanc, Deschamps, Thuram, and Zidane are on the opposing side..... You owe it to your opposition to show some respect, and not doing so, earned you what you DESERVED.

personally i dont think Italy deserved the loss, it is my opinion and dont bash me for it, we showed alot of heart for the most game and we thought we had it won and France stole the cup out of our hands. the reason why Holland outshot us was because we had a quick red card from the start of the match and we were fortunate to win in PK. but besides that , that italian squad was on of the strongest not to win the cup. whatever like i said you cant change history.

il gazzetto said exactly the same thing at the time, on both counts... "to lose, OK, but not like that!"

It's true we didn't deserve to win the final, but we played the best football of the tournament, therefore we deserved the cup.

Did France deserve to lose against Germany in 1982 up 3-1 in extra time? Had they had the golden goal back then it would have been over, and France could have won the World Cup..... Again, all you can do is give credit where it's due, to the Germans for coming back and winning on penalties....

In 1986 we beat Italy and Brazil before losing to the Germans again..... In Football you can't lament what could of been or what is fair. It's just the way things go. The Euro Final in 00 may or may not have been a "fair" result..... but you have to hand it to the French.... They never gave up, not once, even though the game was one kick away from being over. That is what makes champions.

Quite frankly i don't think we would have won in the final in 82.
We would have been knackered just like the germans were and would have lost against one of the best Italy side ever.

Possibly.... Point being there is no point complaining that we deserved better.... What happens.... happens.... That is football. Saying France didn't deserve it in 00 is as absurd as saying that Italy didn't deserve it in 82 or Argentina didn't deserve it in 86, or Germany in 90, etc...

You've to be lucky to win a tournament, Italy was also very lucky with those 2 missed penalties by the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
I can't even remember a winner of a major tournament who hadn't the luck on his side ...

Thierry Roland (our beloved expert) has said he thought that France would have win the WC if they had beaten the Germans in semi-finals, because they had just beaten Italy a few months ago in Paris (2-0, I think). The spell was kinda broken, because Italy had beaten us almost every time until then (and now it's the exact opposite).

Good old Randy also deleted the Trezeguet missle past Toldo to put the final nail in the Azzurri coffin...... I don't know which goal I liked better, but I'm leaning towards the Wiltord goal, because he resurrected the team from the dead in 5 quick seconds.
Nope, I only deleted the Trez goal...thought about Wiltord too, but that would be a heinous abuse of my mod powers, so I let that one be.

If I could make this post my signature line, I probably would. Too bad it's too f'in long, though.

We took our foot off the gas and got burned. WTF are you gonna do. I wanted to win that particular trophy more than any WC I've seen since 1990 (since for once I was actually in Italy during the tournament), but we ********ed up ourselves. Plain and simple.

Yes, but that game in Paris was probably a friendly, I assume. So the motivation behind winning a friendly against a country you have beaten almost every time (until then) is different than the motivation of being in a final. Italy played like crap leading up to the 1982 WC, and even played like crap in the group stage against Poland, Peru, and Cameroon, but with victories over Argentina, Brazil, and Poland (hey!) behind us, it would have been a lot different. ;)

It would have been one hell of a final to watch, either way. I can only be thankful for how things went (though I was heartbroken for France after that semifinal).
