I spotted a good thread on the US board about the World Rankings. The yanks, like most of us realise that the FIFA rankings are all a bit un-reliable and they started posting which teams THEY thought were in the top 20 in the World.

It got me thinking; based on current squad and upcoming qualifying, and not taking into consideration the past few years, i really would rate us back up in the higher numbers.

When i was getting down to #20, i thought, there are not many more teams i would say that are THAT much better than us.

I think we could beat teams like Russia, Turkey, Greece, and Switzerland. I don't think we could necessarily compete with them yet (we would stumble somewhere along the lines), but in a one off game we could take them.

It will take us another 6-12 months under Smith to get the required consistancy but after that i think the results will follow and confidence will return.

Anyway, i have rambled on; what would everybody's top 20 be? Oh, and i ranked us at 25btw.

If it's not Scottish, it's crap! I say out with the rankings altogether.

Besides, Walter Smith will have them back in no time. Ey lad!

I put us Yanks at about 10-12, realistically.Certainly not 7 where we currently reside.

I think 25 is still a pretty optimistic estimate. Certainly Scotland are capable of beating the teams you named, but I wouldn't give even odds against Russia and Greece, at least. Scotland's great dive in rankings--not just FIFA but in those elusive reality rankings---has as much to do with the improvement of many other countries. There are now a half dozen African teams that are pretty decent, a couple more from CONCACAF, and a few from Asia. There are at least 15-20 teams better than Scotland outside Europe now.
