Just finished watching Sky Sports News on FSC, and they had audio of Bretos and Harkes' commentary on both goals in the USA-Scotland match. When they cut back to the anchors, you could hear both of them chuckling a bit. So it appears our boy Max is now a world wide phenomenon!

My favorite part of Max' call during the Scotland game were:

A) when he referred to a move as a "comb over." I have no idea what that meant but I don't remember the next five minutes or so of the game as I was pondering what the hell that could have meant.

B) When he referred to Josh Wolff's "inner dialogue." Uh, Max, if he was talking to himself, who was the second person in the "dialogue?" (Hint: Diaglogue us a conversation between two people; a monolgogue is when one person talks to himself.)

He said something about "comb over" not translating very well, as if he was trying to turn a Spanish saying into English. Having said that, I don't know what a combover would be in Spanish, either.

My favorite part of Max yesterday was anytime he wasn't talking.

I may be wrong, but I thought that the comb over was when the ball skipped across someone's head without the someone being able to redirect it much.

I actually rewound to look at what he was calling a comb-over. He used it to describe a sideways flick-on header. Not a bad joke, IMO. Plus, he made that self-deprecating comment right afterwards about it sounding better in Spanish.

I realize Bretos irritates people because he spends to much time trying to be funny, but he's never bothered me much because I've never gotten the feeling he takes himself too seriously. However, yesterday I was having a hard time figuring out who was doing what because he was just chatting to Harkes about whatever crossed his mind instead of calling the game. I don't need much (it's not radio, after all), but I would have preferred he tell me who was on the ball ever once in a while, especially with all the new faces.

Finally, I had a difficult time figuring out why the Sky Sports desk jockeys felt the need to snigger at those particular clips--the goal calls were not particularly bad or even unusual as far as I could tell. In fact, I was wondering if they snorting over the idea that a US and Scotland friendly was anything to get that excited over. In any case, to me it seemed more like an indication of the size of the sticks they've got rammed up their own asses than anything like apt commentary about what they'd just shown.

There was a reason why Bretos didn't talk about the game.

The game itself didn't matter.

The USMNT has ZERO meaningful games after September 3. The next meaningful match will be the World Cup itself.

I would be surprised if more than 20% of the "Honda Player of the Year" voting panel even bothered to tape the match, much less watch it.

You're on about this again? Obviously it wasn't a meaningful match, it was only a friendly. Doesn't mean that people shouldn't expect a decent commentating job. Speaking of meaningful things, I don't think the Honda Player of the Year counts considering they just hand it to Landon Donovan every year.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you've got a carefully constructed argument lurking in there somewhere about how we should only be scheduling friendlies against teams going to the WC (a nice, if fantastically unrealistic, idea, plus Scotland was no slouch), but even if you do, it wouldn’t make for a sensible response to my post. Regardless of whether US vs Scotland accorded with your definition of “meaningful,” Fox broadcast the game and the primary interest deriving from the game was the performance of the players as candidates for the WC 06 roster and therefore it would have been nice if Bretos’ commentary had been a little more enlightening in that regard.

On the other hand, maybe I’ve misjudged the hobbyhorse you rode in on and the calculus you use to determine if a game matters is more occult than some lavishly impractical notion of how to prepare for the World Cup. What could it be, I wonder? Something to do with the Gold Standard, perhaps? Do Scotland and Norway have Martians on their teams? Non-WC games only matter if teams’ names include at least three of the letters in your mother’s maiden name? In any case, I still can’t see why any of that would justify an announcer singing tone poems instead of doing play-by-play, given that’s what he is by definition supposed to do.

Geez...

And I thought Jamie Trecker was the leader in the clubhouse in the "pimping myself at every opportunity" sweepstakes.

I liked how - on numerous occaisions - he referred to the USA as "prohibitive favorites" in this match. Of course, the bookies all had Scotland as the favorites (albeit slight). I just love how Max pulls things out of his arse like this though. :p

Also frustrating how - again on NUMEROUS occaisions - he would say "the flag went up very late" everytime an offsides decision was made. How could someone who's full-time job it is to follow soccer not know about the new offsides rule (ie. that the flag doesn't go up until the player in the offsides position touches the ball)???

It is still possible for the flag to go up very late on offsides decisions even with the new rule although I'm sure it didn't happen every time. There are frequently times when a player is offside, receives the ball puts it into the net and the flag will not have gone up until the ball is in the back of net.

Right. But there were at least 3 times on Saturday where the flag went up at exactly the correct time and it was also the correct call. But Bretos still said "late flag".

Yeah, you're right, he's an idiot. I'll stop defending Bretos before I feel the need to hurt myself.

Combover was covered already. I thought it was funny as well.
Re: inner dialogue/monologue, you're wrong. A monologue is when a person delivers a soliloquy or a speech without feedback from someone else. Just a one-way talk. Inner dialogue is a perfectly valid expression and was used correctly by Bretos: http://www.google.com/search?q=inner+dialogue&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

Yeah, there are things our announcers can improve on, but there's no need to call them out on things which are actually fine.

Max has done it again! Just watched the Lecce game on FSC, and after they won, Max proclaimed "Sweet as candy!" I just groaned. :p

How about his singing? Seriously hoping he suffers a career-ending injury to the larynx.

Too mean? ;)

Never said I hated Max, I like him. Just being a little sarcastic here.
