Is "Mambo Kurt" still alive? I loved his version of "Basket Case". He could just cover one of the old WC songs and it would sound great.

Why has no-one mentioned Flaco yet? Can sing in German or English and has a great career behind him/her/it.

And you've got to love Falco. Born Johann Holzel in 1957, he left his native Austria for West Berlin in the mid '70s, playing bass for rock, jazz, and punk bands. After borrowing the name Falco from an East German skier, he headed back to Vienna and embarked on a solo career in which he made a name for himself by rapping in German to your sub-standard Euro-disco
We have a winner!!!

I take it Kraftwerk is out?
I was going to suggest Kraftwerk. They toured recently (I saw them), so they are still alive and kicking. I can totally see them singing "World Cup, World Cup". :)

I totally can't see Kraftwerk singing a "hymn"?!

I did not realize that the World Cup song had to be a hymn.
I think some of Kraftwerk's songs are hymnal in the way they approach the subject matter. But yeah, I suppose structurally, they do not write hymns.
However, I am sure they could make a song that is very vibrant and inspirational, and also praises the sport of soccer and captures the pageantry of the World Cup.

Being dead is a possible handicap, though :D.

Speaking of dead German-speaking musicians...
Klaus Nomi would have made an interesting performer..

The only living german Group that is up to anything is "Les Hommes Sauvages". But a World Cup Song has to appeal to the worst in extremely dull people around the world. I would like to see a cooperation of Xavier Naidoo with Dieter Bohlen and this old Guy who once had an media-affair with Bohlen´s Naddel. Something slow and dramatic about humanity and how important every day is. Sarah Connor from Osterholz-Scharmbek could wiggle around a little in the background.
My Top Five Footballsongs of all time, btw:
1. Love on the terraces - Serious Drinking
2. Top of the World - Chumbawumba
3. Three Lions - Lightning Seeds
4. There´s a Cloud over Liverpool - Teenage Filmstars
5. Wir stehen auf SV Werder - Die Mimmies

It´s Osterholz-Scharmbek!!! Not Delmenhorst. You are confusing Sarah Connor with the new Element of Crime Single.

And I have never ever heard a single Element of Crime song, so I doubt this :D.

Ok, so she actually was born in Delmenhorst. She certainly has been shopping in Osterholz-Scharmbek, or she had her first boyfriend there or her wedding-planner was from Osterholz. Actually I´m not even sure of that. I see in my mind a distinct connection between Osterholz-Scharmbek and Sarah Connor, though. Oh well. Osterholz-Scharmbek is more blessed than I thought. I take a bow. :(

So, Sarah Connor's born in Delmenhorst and hangs out in Osterholz-Scharmbek eh?
Damn, I gotta make a phone call. Someone's been looking for her.

I would also like to add that Osterholz-Scharmbeck (sic ;)) sucks. Let's go FTB!
Note: you need to follow 5th division soccer in Lower Saxony to get this.

Has this thread really deteriorated into an argument over Sarah Conner's place of residence?

You started it! ;)
If you had picked another pop singer, trash like Jeanette Biedermann, Yvonne Catterfeld, Gracia or that other woman from DSDS maybe, I wouldn't have cared at all.
But everyone who attacks Sarah Connor shall fear my wrath :D.
And if I ever catch someone saying something bad about Dido on here, things will get REALLY nasty. You've been warned...
