But Sarah connor is by no means better than Wir sind Helden.

Hm, let's see... good mainstream pop vs. well... whatever Wir sind Helden play... it's not Hard Rock, Heavy Metal or good mainstream pop, therefore Sarah wins! :D Roxette vs. Sarah would have been closer though...

*sings*
From Sarah with love
She'd got the lover she is dreaming of
She never found the words to say
But I know that today
She's gonna send her letter to you

From Sarah with love
She took your picture to the stars above
And they told her it is true
She could dare to fall in love with you
So don't make her blue when she writes to you
From Sarah with love

Alex_K, your analysis of German music is dead on. I find myself tolerating Wir Sind Helded because they are the least bad of the lot, but then I pause for a moment of clarity and realise just how bad they are, too. It's a rehash of thousands of British bands that aren't very good either, and done with one of the weakest vocalists I've ever heard (and mind you, they're the best of the lot).

I'm reminded of the idea floated a couple years ago of establishing a quota of German language music on the radio. Just what we need, a government mandate to play even MORE Yvonne Catterfeld. Jesus.

AlexK.

I´m a huge Herbie fan, but his english translated songs are, let´s say suboptimal. Herbie lives from his lyrics and that wouldn´t work for the world.

I personally don´t like any kind of easy listening or worldmusic, I don´t like Cretu, I only made a statement of the international approach and usability for the TV spots. He sells multimillion discs worldwide and is oftenly used for any kind of trailers.

I´m not a big fan of Xavier Naidoo, for his arrogance and his christian bigottery (spelling?), but he is a fine singer who can sing great hymns in english.

2raumwohnung and Wir sind Helden were only mentioned by me for the case that the song should promote some german Zeitgeist to international audience.

I the end I´m shure they want to use somebody like Robbie Williams, which would be fine. He is the big european star that likes football. But I think, they would not get him and so we get some semi second or third class star or a star from yesterday on his 3rd comeback.

In 2002 it was Anastacia (who I believe admited to never having seen a soccer game)

In 1998 we had Ricky Martin asking us if we 'really want it'

In 1994 Hall & Oats tried to resuscitate their career

In 1990 it was some Italian guy wailing on

So the question needs to be asked, who will sing it in 2006?

To set some parameters for the sake of discussion:
1. let's limit ourselves to German artists
2. notice that the artists above are either at the beginning or end of their careers, and none were top notch at the time
3. as funny as some obscure metal band would be, let's try to be both funny and realistic

Have at it:
Ricky Martin had a "top notch" period in his career?

I'm hoping for someting similiar to the song that was used for Euro 2000 which was the E-type Campioni song.

Also, why should it be limited to German artists? Especially considering the artists you named for other tournaments in the past.

It won´t be limited to them.
The official song will be sung by some English speaking singer i guess,
because the WC is a world-event. I don´t care from where the singer is from,
only important thing is, that the song will sound good and makes good mood.

At my first reply i thought, we discussed about the song for the German NT,
but now i read the title of the thread.

So international artists: Robbie Williams will propably make it.

Robbie would be great, but I think he is over the top of Fifa's head. Plus, he is no big deal in the US, so they may consider that, too.

I only put that as a perameter to guide the discussion. Obviously FIFA will not limit itself to German artists, I just thought the discussion would be more interesting if we did.

Robbie could be a good bet, actually (on the down side of his career, I would argue, too).

The WC won't be a big deal in the states, so Robbie'd fit quite good.

And btw I like "Wir sind Helden" :p

I would like to see Kraftwerk come up with a cool WC song the way they came up with "Tour de France".

If I was Sepp...

Einstürzende Neubauten.
Can.
Neu!
Kraftwerk.
Faust.
Atari Teenage Riot

or we could go with some ruhr thrash..

Kreator
Sodom
Destruction

or Karlheinz Stockhausen. We could have the Helicopter String Quartet do the theme song! :D
