How do I prevent IE popup ads on my computer? I don't even use IE (I use Firefox and occasionally Netscape) and literally every thirty seconds I get a popup ad in IE. I have tried running Anti-Spyware programs, pop-up blocker software, and even went to the IE options to disable everything, and I still get hordes of pop-up ads.

It's friggin' annoying!

Is there a way to simply remove or disable IE completely from my computer since I never intend to use IE anyway? Or is there another way that I can stop all the popups?

Take a look at this site (http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/). I suspect they aren't IE popups (tho somehow they might be) but are, in fact, Windows Messenger popups. If what you get look like those, follow the directions on that page to turn off the service.

However, they are indeed IE popups. I know what you mean by Windows Messenger popups. I used to get those all the time but I got firewall software a few years ago that solved that problem.

I don't even understand how this happens, frankly, since I ran my spyware and deleted all the adware software on my computer. I also completely disabled cookies, etc. from all my browser applications. I don't even run IE. But somehow it just keeps opening itself with another stupid ad on my screen.

my guess is that you still have some spyware on your computer that is dug in good. try running some different spyware and see what it finds.

more likely than not you have a trojan horse that just reinstalls the junk after you clean it.

When I had this problem, Hijack This took care of it - after Spybot and Adaware had pretty much struck out.

The issue with Hijack This is that I think you can potentially mess up your computer if you delete the wrong thing. What I did was run a scan, and then plug the name of any suspicious looking item that showed up into Google - if it was malware, I could usually find mentions of it as such; if it was legit, the same. That's worked for me so far, but you'll want to be careful.

That's pretty much any program. If you delete the wrong thing, you could end up with problems. Like you said, a google search should be able to determine what is good and what is bad.

What you can also try (poster with spyware problem) is to restart your computer, and keep hitting the F8 key. When the prompt screen comes up, choose to load in safe mode. (If you haven't been there before, the graphics won't look normal, but you'll be able to scan and re-start.) Then run all your anti-spy programs.
