Just saw Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" and I was blown away by it. Along with "Princess Mononoke" its very worthy of being in any top list of the last fifteen years. I recomend it to everyone who is looking for that extra thing that you don't see in movies nowadays. Absolutely amazing and I'm not one easily impressed by movies, let alone animated ones.
Great shout - I love Japanese animated cinema, from the fantasy of Miyazaki to the Manga edge (Akira, Ghost in the Machine etc). Takes me back to my childhood watching the naffness of G-Force and Battle of the Planets - ah sweet memories :)

I'm with you, I also grew up on that stuff and there's something nostalgic about it, something mythical and its just another world, as it explores stuff you don't neccessarily encounter in Hollywood or on tv, etc.

Spirited Away is pretty incredible -- especially if you understand its symbolism.. But for me, personally, Princess Mononoke is a supreme work of art. I've watched it six times and own the DVD :D I also really like most other Studio Ghibli films. Miyazaki's most recent 'Howl's Moving Castle' was a disappointment for me, though, and the film I least enjoy out of all his films.

I signed a petition at Anime Expo '00 to get Mononoke released on DVD with subtitles. Disney had originally did just a dubbed version release. I'm a staunch subtitle advocate when it comes to my anime.

This coming week (1/12), it's "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind" and "Castle in the Sky"; and then (1/19), "My Neighbor Tortoro" and "Porco Rosso". I'm really excited about these, as I've only ever seen "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke" (which I join Sir M and PS [EDIT: and others, damn!] in recommending, particularly the latter). I will definitely be watching and eager to discuss.

I've watched all of them, and these other films are quite different from Spirited Away and Mononoke, which are slightly more mature in theme and concept. Nausicaa is probably the most serious, and closest to SA/Mononoke in terms of its appeal to adults...
However, Totoro, Porco Rosso and Castle in the Sky are all magical films. To me, anyways :D Will be nice to see what other posters think of the other Ghibli movies.

Have you seen NightWatch? I have been tracking it for a year now and am extremely excited about it. I can't seem to get an update on its release though. :(

Has there really been a good ruski movie since '90?

Ghost in the Machine is an awful movie, if we're thinking of the same one.

My bad - Ghost in the Shell is the one with the "enhanced" cops tracking down the virus which corrupts androids etc yes? Thats the one I meant - great soundtrack as well...
