Togo has annouced to camp at a resort close to Hamburg ( some Bad ... ).
According to a Ghanaian radio station the Black Stars narrowed their choices to Leverkusen and Frankfurt/Main.

How much do nations FAs have to pay to get their team somewhere? I know some teams may have difficulty to pay for the fees.

I don't know, but I just read that Brasil offered some cities to stay there if these cities pay them 500.000€. But afaik no city accepted that offer and it seems that Brasil wants to stay in Berlin (without getting paid).
Btw the USNT made an excellent choice ;)

There are bucketloads of Brazilians in Berlin, so I'm not surprised they'd stay here. Wonder if they'll be using Union's facilities, then (I assume Germany will take Hertha's training ground).

No doubt an excellent choice, but I wonder why they chose Hamburg. I figured they would be somewhere south, which is: (a) where American tourists tend to congregate; and (b) where US military bases tend to be. Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, Munich, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and points in between.

Yes, the German NT will train in Hertha's facilities, cos they are the best in Berlin.

@wolfsburgh
Afaik US choose Hamburg cos they simply liked the city.

There was a raging (and in my personal opinion rather stupid) discussion over on the US boards about the Hamburg choice a few weeks ago. No need to rehash it here. The choice is simple, really. Arena showed at the last WC that he prefers to have the team stay in a city where there are other distractions rather than sequestering the team out in the middle of nowhere like Sampson did in France. I'd guess they probably looked at Köln, Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich as well and decided that Hamburg was the best choice.

I remember that...I tihnk Keith started that too by giving his excerpt of his letter to the USMNT.

Perhaps that´s the reason, why they chose Hamburg.
At a WC most team managers want their team fully concentrate on the tournament. Remember how few public trainings Klinsmann made during the Confed-Cup or another example England, in the qualification there their training camp was like a high-security wing.

Thanks for pointing out that thread. An "interesting" read.

My thought process in figuring that USMNT base of ops would be South was a bit different than that expressed by anyone else:

1. US citizens tend to vacation more in the South, and would be more familiar with the South.

2. US military bases in the South mean that: (a) the area is accustomed to Americans; and (b) there is likely more geared for Americans in the South than in the North, which tends more towards Great Britain.

3. As a result of 1 and 2 above, the South might be a tad more "comfortable" for the team and its fans.

Quite frankly, I wasn't really thinking of terrorists or military support or photo ops.

I appreciate what seems to be the consensus reason for the US choice: Hamburg is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with lots of entertainment options, which contrasts sharply with the country estate a'la 1998. But still, that same vibrancy can approximated, if not replicated, in Munich, or Nuremberg, or Stuttgart, or Frankfurt (maybe not K-town, but why not Mainz, which I hear is lovely). While Hamburg may have more options than, say, Stuttgart, you are only there for three weeks and I would imagine Stuttgart (never having been there myself) would keep the most social of butterflies occupied for three weeks. On balance, Hamburg makes less sense than Southern locales.

Does anyone know where it is, exactly, that the US will be training? I suspect that the real answer lies therein. The US probably got a good deal on a top-flight facility, and figured that it was best to book now than scrap for leftovers later. In that respect, Hamburg was likely the best choice.

On a totally unrelated note, my college hosted a NT during the 1994 WC (it eludes me now which team, but I think it was the Irish; I also think the Germans trained briefly there). Ironically, the same venue was criticized a couple years ago when it hosted the Div. III Men's Final Four. Not good enough for Division III soccer, but good enough for a World Cup team. I always got a chuckle out of that.

Finally, in reviewing the thread above, I noticed that the infamous Thomas Flannigan was redcarded. Anyone know why?

Yes. And despite my apparent "stupidity", I'm not finished with it yet.....

(I meant the cause, not the letter......)

English tip for thread starter. You should say 'stay' instead of 'rest'.
