If we have cash to spend in January, people at our club are intent on telling the entire world about it and thus making sure we get ripped off on any deal

Fergie came out today and said he'll strengthen in January...reiterating what he's said a few days ago...

Erm, why is he doing that for?

Motterman was complaining about this very thing a couple of weeks ago in the "Glazer era" thread. It doesn't make sense to me either.

Perhaps he's just trying to do it to give the current squad a kick up the backside, apart from that I haven't got a clue.

The more I try to think of ways that this might be a good thing, the more I'm convinced that there isn't anything good about this. :(

I was wondering that too, DS. I spent my whole drive to work coming up with a reason we'd want our buying intentions splashed out on the front page of all the papers...but unfortunately I can't come up with one. :(

I read it earlier on a few sites then saw it on MUTV and everytime I was thinking.. what possible reason could there be to declare to the whole world that we are going to be buying in January.. the next thing will be telling everyone precisely how much we have to spend

This £25m in January talk has to be bollocks, which club spends £25m in January???

*scratches head.

The only reason I can think of is something to do with appeasing the fans :(

Arsenal...when they brought in Reyes. Can't think of any others...but the only way we're going to spend that much is if we need to bring a damn good player.

This is the qoute from teletext:

" I will look to increase the squad in January. But you must dismiss the possibilty of getting players from clubs who think they can win the Champions League."

which rules out nearly all the qualty players as well...including Ballack..wouldn't you just hope this is all a ingenius smokescreen...

I think this must be he only reason.. or as I have been suggesting before, we already have a done deal for someone?

Yeah, here it was:

OK, another thing about this "Fergie has unlimited transfer funds available to catch Chelsea" press release...

Why alert Chelsea (or anybody else for that matter) that we are prepared to spend big? Hasn't anybody been paying attention to what they've been doing in the transfer market the last 2 years? Namely, swooping on our transfer targets, or helping to scupper our deals. We probably only got Park for as cheap as we did, since all the clubs in the world think we are probably skint.

But no, now let's come out with a story that we can be had for big money (that we can't really afford to spend, but we have to now since Glazer's analysts have probably just figured out how fickle football fans can be)...

This is all PR and nothing more, and it's going to actually backfire on us because of it's shortsightedness. Bloody hell, I just read this story 6 minutes ago, and I can already see how this is the worst move the Glazers could have made if they were truly concerned about the health of this club. Any money spent just adds to the debt anyways. And now that prices will be jacked up again, because we have "unlimited funds" we're back to where we were when Kenyon was f'in up our deals....

WHAT COMPLETE MORONS!!!!

It does rule out a lot of players, although there is a good number of quality players out there who aren't playing in the CL.
Fergie's quote is however worrying vis-a-vis Ballack. Perhaps we'll be looking to have a pre-contract agreement arranged with Ballack to sign him in the summer, but somehow I'm not too optimistic about us signing him for other reasons.

Its quite shrewd when you think of it really... not necessarily declaring that he's got money to burn but saying he'll be buying players... with that announcement most of the
disgruntled players not getting minutes or not pleased with their team's performance will speak to their agents... this will lead to a host of rumours, most of which will be bollocks thus preventing the one club who would buy just to block us, from doing so.

We won't have to compete as much with other clubs who'd rather make their purchases in the summer and it might be worth paying at a small premium now rather than getting into a bidding war in the summer, only to fail to land the player/s we desire.

Why SAF and Glazer are talking about spending when we're in an arse load of debt is beyond my comprehension. Everyone knows we don't have that kind of jack to throw around anymore.

I thought you wanted us to buy some players and watch them go CRAZY!!!! ;)

Honestly, I dont give a rats behind if Fergie shouts to the mountain tops about buying players. Everything he does, he does for a reason. As someone else said, it might be to motivate the players, who knows? But why would declaring his intention to buy in January hurt us? It's not like keeping it secret then bidding in January is gonna prevent "United Tax".

Or maybe we where looking to take the somkescreen thing even further and by tricking Chelsea into buying whoever we allegedly are after and so bolstering their squad even further and soon enough discontent will be spreading within their ranks. I think Fergie is masterminding this pretty well.
