Oh don't worry. Rick only drinks weak vodka and coke and then only about 1 per every hour and a half. ;)

so so true. Talks the talk...

Damon Bailey became famous in Junior High, when he was featured in a book about Bobby Knight as a prospect that Knight was already recruiting. He went on to set the Indiana High School scoring record, play for Indiana, and get drafted by the Pacers where he was a flop. But in a way he was always most well known for being recruited as a 13 year old.

Damon played high school basketball at Bedford North Lawrence High down in southwestern Indiana. he was (is) a prep legend here. when his team played in the state championship game against eric montross' team (can't remember where he went to school) in the hoosier dome, there was well over 40,000 in attendence - for a high school basketball game.

bailey actually came to prominence when bob knight fawned over him in the eighth grade. this just happened to coincide with john feinstein's book a season on the brink, so you had this middle school kid getting major exposure through the book, and, of course, because folks here in indiana are (or at least back then were) severely into their hoops. he naturally went to IU, where he played on some very good teams. he was drafted by the indiana pacers, but had some injury problems and (i believe) never played in the NBA.

he ended up playing for a few years in the CBA for the fort wayne fury, before hanging it up. he wrote a book a couple of years ago, and was actually in my bookstore to sign copies shortly thereafter. he's a thoroughly decent and level-headed fellow.

it sounds stupid to say this, but i'd venture that he was as popular in indiana as almost any professional athlete is in their own homebase. i'm serious.

edit: oops. should've refreshed the screen. antifan beat me to it.

Damon Bailey played college ball at Indiana. not sure where he went in the pros. He was labeled as "the next...." someone when he was in college, it might have even been when he was in high school.

knight claimed in his book, that Bailey (as an 8th grader) could start for his IU team (which won the national title).
thus the hype machine started.

edit: see above.. lmao. :D

Just amazing stuff to be there. I was disappointed that I did not get to sing the Vieira song because that was one of my favorites, but getting to sing Bergkamp Wonderland more than made up for it. This was his 300th appearance for Arsenal!

isn't it just mind blowing to see your heroes RIGHT THERE, right in front of you, for the first time? its was almost like an out-of-body experience for me!

Thanks again for posting...can't rep you though (have to spread it around)..not that you need any more!! ;)
