The San Jose Earthquakes will be sold, but the chances of a potential buyer bringing the franchise to Houston are looking slim.
The Anschutz Entertainment Group, the Earthquakes' Los Angeles-based parent company, is apparently fed up with the money-losing enterprise and could decide to sell the team as early as next week, according to an online report Friday by the San Jose Mercury News.
ut unlike early this year, no one seems interested in bringing the Quakes to Houston.
"I'm not aware of any investor groups that AEG is talking to that are based here in Houston or that would want to move the franchise to Houston," said Harris County-Houston Sports Authority head Oliver Luck, who has been involved in efforts to bring an MLS team here.

Of course I hope the Quakes stay in San Jose, but I sincerely hope Houston is awarded an expansion franchise. Good luck to both cities!

But to tell you the truth, I don't remember the people from TeleVisa looking to bring SJQ to Houston.

This is semi good news for Quakes fans however the MLS could still pull the plug on both KC & the Quakes like they did with both the Fusion & the Mutiny in 2002.
We still have no clue in San Jose who the new group will be or if a new group even exists. Everyone is keeping this thing silent. The only clue is maybe Ajax-America. I'll believe it when I see it.

Of course there is a group! AEG, SSV, and Ajax America have all said there is. The season is over. If there was not a group why would SSV continue with the charade? Unless it is all a huge conspiracy concocted by AEG, that Ajax and SSV all bought into to help AEG get leverage with whoever they sell the team to in another city. If so, we can all look forward to an Oliver Stone movie about it in a few years.

On the Galaxy boards, in the thread for Smurf whiners, there's a little sequence around p.12 about a soap opera based on the sordid lies of AEG and their Conspiracy to bomb Smurfequistan.

They kept up the Tony Ammanpour charade long enough to make it not viable to move the team last year.
Don't buy it. I am sure at this point AEG would only be willing to work with serious potential investors. You know, "once bitten, twice shy"!

Bingo.
SSV has been full of SH-T from Day 1.
If SSV actually had a real investor lined up, the media would have OUTED him a long time ago.
SSV has never had any credibility whatsoever, first by trucking out one Tony Amanpour, whom anyone with a quarter of a brain would have known that he doesn't have the money to buy the Quakes, then by pumping out one letter after another to tell its "members" exactly what they want to hear.

Ok Oliver, did you happen to read the article in the Merc and what Lieweke had to say? Is AEG pumping out this info on behalf of SSV now? Since you managed to come to that understanding about Amanpour, yes I do believe your statement that "anyone with a quarter of a brain" could do it.

Carlos, Carlos, Carlos, (sigh).
1) I don't believe in any conspiracies. I only said that in response to what the previous poster had said.
2) I have no interest in what may be on the LA board, have never been there, never will. Besides, I get enough of what LA fans have to say from those who feel the need to speak out on the Quake board. ;)

I just spoke to one person who worked for his company who received the eviction notice out of their office building last year. Tony Amanpour was using the Quakes as a way to get his company off the ground. He was trying to get his Iranian-American soccer buddies to invest in the Quakes as a front. He said it was just a big scam to save his company.

I know, I know; it's just fun to create fictionalized versions of SJ's follies. ;)

If this were true, then SSV is even more full of SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-T than I or anyone originally thought.

It is true and I agree with you about SSV. I don't believe them at all!

They kept up the Tony Ammanpour charade long enough to make it not viable to move the team last year.SSV notified AEG the night they found out that Amanpour was a fraud. Prior to that it was AEG who gave Amanpour whatever legitimacy he appeared to have. AEG was parading him before city councils, announcing a preliminary joint operating agreement, announcing schedules for letters of intent to be signed and deposits to be made, and scrapping plans to move the club because of Amanpour's interest. Why was AEG doing all of this if Amanpour was so obviously a fraud?

Someone at AEG obviously FUBAR-ed to the point where he/she didn't do the necessary due diligence on Amanpour.
I was NOT the only one who thought the Amanpour story didn't add up.
There were plenty of people who suspected that Amanpour was a complete fraud the moment SSV and AEG paraded him out.

Maybe, maybe not. In any case, the San Jose Earthquakes are still here, a good four years since a certain someone first promised their demise.
I can't wait for the San Jose Earthquakes - Los Angeles MFL team friendly next season. :D

Why was AEG doing all of this if Amanpour was so obviously a fraud?Yeah, the people who want to place all the blame on SSV for the Amanpour episode don't really understand their role. They are essentially "facilitators". I would imagine that they facilitated the contact between AEG and Amanpour, and then at that point the dealings are largely between AEG and Amanpour, with SSV continuing to help facilitate things like the discussion of a stadium in Santa Clara at the city council meeting (attended by AEG, Amanpour, SSV founders and some members).
I'm sure they would be the first to tell you that they made a mistake in running with the Amanpour group too quickly. But I'm 100% certain that it was a completely honest mistake, and I'm sure they are bending over backwards not to make the same mistake again. Also, I think people make too much of the state of Amanpour's personal finances. He was not a sole investor, but the head of an investment group he was assembling. And he did build a business that at one time was quite successful. So it's not like he's a guy with a completely fraudulent resume who has never actually achieved any level of success in his business career. Otherwise, I doubt AEG would have entered into any kind of substantive negotations with him.
