Ok my stupid friend has still not gotten a passport which is the only acceptable form of idenification for the ticket application. I believe I read earlier that if you purchased tickets for someone who ended up not being able to go, you could change the ticket to another person, so my question is: Would it work if I used his girlfriends information then when his slow self finally gets a passport change her tickets over to him?
Thanks!
Yes. I did it for the last World Cup with a friend of a friend's passport and got two tickets to all the games. Eventually my friend got his sht together to go and we just changed the tix to his name.
Of course, for this World Cup, my girlfriend did not get her sht together in time (still waiting for passport), so we're using my roomie's passport and then changing them to her name later.

Yup. That's actually what USSF told my friend to do when he called and asked them what to do if his Passport doesn't come in time.

Can someone recap for me the advantage (if any) of sending in the application by fax vs. express mail? Are tickets to be sold on a first-come basis, which would naturally mean that a fax would be preferrable? Thanks for your help.

Yeah, they're first come-first served.

Just remember this....
The problem with CAT IV is they are only offered from the Prelim round
through USSF and cannot be combined with tickets from CAT IV. If you
are staying past the prelim round you need to get CAT III. Please read
the USSF info carefully and have everything planned out with CORRECT
INFO FOR EACH ticket. You will not have a second chance.

Why do you say if staying past prelim round need CAT III? CAT IV is alos available beyond prelim from USSF. What am I missing? Or are you saying that if you purchase CAT IV AND REQUESTING Tickets for Prelims (FIXED) and the Elimination rounds, then you would be out of luck because you can only purchase 2 tickets for up to 3 matches in Cat IV. If so, you are correct....guess they are trying to encourage more $$.
I wonder if you request Cat III for all possible matches, but only CAT IV are available if they will cut your request to 3 matches and if so, which ones....guess we will see....
Thanks.

Sometimes the links get buried in threads, here they are again one more time:
US Soccer WC Ticket Info:

US World Cup Ticket FAQ:
http://www.ussoccer.com/schedule/content.sps?iType=4165&icustompageid=16215
and just one additional note to the FAQ:
Good news everyone. USSF will be including a line for Sam's Army on the
final ticketing order form. It will be something like below:
Check this box if you would like your tickets in seating dedicated for
Sam's Army. U.S. Soccer does not have final control of ticket allocations from FIFA, and there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate this request, but best efforts will be made to seat you in a designated area for Sam's Army.
Bottom line, we have not received any kind of assurance from FIFA that
we will be able to seat groups together, but we are going to do
everything we can to try and make this happen (whether that means
getting approval from them, or submitting the orders together, or
whatever) We will see if we can pull it off.
*Continue to encourage people who want to be seated with Sam's Army to sign up for Category 3 tickets.

I understand that you can't mix CAT I, II, III with CAT IV - not a problem. What I am trying to understand is why you stated that beyond Prelims must be CAT III? CAT IV is avail beyond, but you can only order a total of 3 games. Yes, If you intend to go to ALL prelims + later rounds then you have to order CAT III, II, or I othewise you can not order enough games.
Thanks and good luck to all...

Also, If I read this correctly the USSF tickets are not the same as the TST's some of us got through FIFA.
FIFA's USA TST's beyond the group phase will be turned into the other teams tickets if we are eliminated....
USSF's USA tickets will only be good if the USA is playing in the match. If the USA is eliminated any tickets for the knockout rounds will be refunded...

oooh, I see. yah, I guess if you want to do it way I guess. Have a ball. I would think most people who are staying past the Preliminary round would want to be in the same Cat all the way through. I have also been looking at this with a supporters angle in mind, and anyone who wants to be in a supporters/Sams Army standing section should get USSF CAT III and look for the check box on the PDF.

22. What are “Fixed Tickets”?
Fixed Tickets are tickets to any of the first three U.S. Group Matches. Tickets are considered “fixed” because match locations, dates, and opponents will not be affected by the results of the preceding matches.
23. What are “Conditional Tickets”?
Conditional Tickets are tickets to the Round of 16, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, 3rd/4th Place, or Final matches. Tickets are considered “conditional” because they will only be valid for entry to the match if the U.S. advances to the specific match. U.S.

Maybe I missed the reply to this question:
Can I fax my order and to ensure receipt follow it up with an overnight to the USSF?
THE ANSWER IS AN EMPHATIC NO! Don't do it -- your order will be in danger of being double charged (with no refund) and then ultimately denied because you requested more than one order per household.
This is in the FAQ link that BigDog has provided. I also got this response back from the USSF in an email and here's the exact verbage.
*If the same order is delivered to U.S. Soccer through multiple methods (i.e. fax AND mail), the order has the potential to be double-processed (in which case any duplication in tickets will not be eligible for a refund) or rejected (due to exceeding the ticket purchase limitations set by FIFA). U.S. Soccer recommends selecting only one method of delivery for your 2006 FIFA World Cup Ticket order. *
Caveat emptor everyone!

If we send it by fax, and it doesn't go through, we'll know right? Like the fax machine will give off a busy signal, won't it?

Use a Fax machine that prints a confirming page once it goes through.
Have a backup fax located in case something goes wrong with yours. Again get a verifying page.
Have a Next Day letter ready to roll in case the faxes are overloaded/phones go down.
I think we all deserve a Graduate class credit after this is done : )

Couldn't agree more. And maybe on Tuesday, we can start sending FIFA ideas for 2010 ticket process. I'm too old for this tension--we're on the road Monday, maybe even on a ferry at noon. aarrgghhhhhh

Sorry if this has been addressed, but I haven't been able to find an answer in the faq's or in the rest of the thread:
Does "opening match" mean the first match in each group, or the first match in the tournament?
Thanks!

If the US is drawn as team A2...
Do you have to pay for the Opening Match tickets seperate from the Group tickets or will they just charge you the price for the Opening Match game on one of the group tickets?
It doesn't seam fair that they'd make you pay for the 3 Group tickets and pay for a 4th ticket just in case the US is in the opening game.
