Messed-Up CD Burner

Ok, here's the problem. My friend's CD burner is messed-up. They say that it used to work but it doesn't work anymore. The only thing is that the cd drive still reads cds (music), but doesn't burn anymore. Any help would be great. :)

Edit: By the way, they have XP.
