View Full Version : what is usenet?
I read an article that stated this will offer ready made video for the new apple iPod? Just wondering what it is and how it works. Is it very complex?

Usenet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet)
Typically your Internet service provide will provide you with either their own news servers or the details for the third party they contracted to do usenet news.
You need a news reader or a browser that supports news groups to "read" them or get binary objects (i.e. movies, audio, pix). I use NewsLeecher
Unlike P2P, people post what they want or what's been requested. There is no peer-to-peer sharing. Also, most ISP news servers do not retain enough information long enough; so "parts" of things will either disappear or on poorly maintained servers just never appear. Hardcore usenet folks (like me) will have a secondary pay-service to get incomplete pieces from (I use Easynews).

We old timers remember Usenet well. Used to be invaluable for following international soccer before the World Wide Web came into being. I remember when rec.sports.misc was the source of soccer scores and I was one of those who voted for the creation of rec.sports.soccer (so we didn't have to sift through professional wrestling posts to find soccer stuff.) Sadly usenet is mostly SPAM now a days and I haven't even bothered to configure my internet at home to receive news groups, but Usenet was great fun back in its day.

Two usenet groups I used a long time ago were for "Married with Children" and college gymnastics.

I used to read alt.smokers.cigars a lot.
I also started a new subgroup of that group named alt.smokers.cigars.marketplace so A.S.C. wouldn't be loaded with so much spam. It didn't work. ;)
I used to lurk on rec.sports.soccer. IIRC, that's where our very own Oliver Tse learned some of his better trolling techniques.

Google has since created a Usenet archive, accessible here (http://www.google.com/googlegroups/archive_announce_20.html).
Yeah, basically it was the internet before the web or any of the online services like AOL, Prodigy, CompuServe, etc. Usenet and BBS (bulletin boards) were the way to go in the 80s.

I never understood why so many people dislikes him and felt there had to be more than what he posted on this board. Thanks for the link.

It's almost scary that you can search you user name and dig up posts from random groups from 10+ years ago. Found some from '93, myself.
