It began in 2003 with The Off-Season Near News and Rumors Thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82274).
It continued in 2004 with The Off-Season Near News and Rumors Thread: Their First Assignment (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151893).
And now the tradition goes on in 2005 with The Off-Season Near News and Rumors Thread: Back In Training!
Most of you are familiar with this institution. Here's the low-down (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=2238174#post2238174) for those who aren't.
Break the rules and you'll have to answer to (recently promoted) Sergeant Moses Hightower (played by Bubba Smith).

Last year we heard about Guppy here first and nobody believed the rumor.
This year I intend to believe everything I read here! :D

Freddy as player/assistant coach - negotiated settlement to give him something to do while on the bench.
Sorry Ben - had to put in something that would even test your limits.

So just some rumors we can look for this offseason:
1. Freddy to Europe/Metros
2. Nowak to... oh wait just signed an extension. OPPS!
3. Retirements: Moreno hangs his boots? Olsen to become a priest???
4. Stadium mysteriously appears one day at Poplar Point
5. AAAA (Again, Another Argentine Acquisition)
6. Dema trade
7. Rimando trade
8. Bobby Boswell moves to Utah to marry K, DekoDCU21, Black & Red #17, CFCinDC, and another SE after a date turns into LOVE.
OK a little fun with it, but I think those are all reasonable rumors.
Woohoo! First page!

Last year we heard about Guppy here first and nobody believed the rumor.
That's because it was such a stupid move on DC's part.
God I hate waking up to see this thread.

9. SHEARER TO DCU (Annual Overaged English Accquisition)
Nah, that won't work. It'd have to be someone incapable of scoring a goal. Peter Crouch, maybe.

Whats Stan Collymore been up to lately?

Roy Keane to DCU. He wants out of Manchester after this season. Of course we would have to get rid of Dema or they would probably kill each other in practice. In return ManU gets first dibs on Freddy

First thing Knave will have to do to this thread is delete all the stupid posts (like this one) on at least the first page or two ....... can't we wait until we actually get a rumor to discuss? Premature posting makes people think they have to come up with one.

If they throw in Tim Howard I'd say go for it.

Alright, alright. Let's get down to the serious business.
Guevara appears to be leaving (http://www.bergen.com/page.php?qstr=eXJpcnk3ZjczN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXkxMzcmZmdiZWw3Zjd2cWVlRUV5eTY4MDcwNzMmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2) - Ives Galarcep
Gee, the Metros are gonna need a new central midfielder if Guevara really does leave. I wonder where they're gonna look to find one ...
Also in that article:
The Metros had turned down approaches for Guevara by other MLS teams, including FC Dallas, which offered U.S. national team forward Eddie Johnson for Guevara.
Now that's interesting. Dallas tried to trade GAM! Wonder when that was. Wonder what it'd take to get him at DC.

I liked this quote from Mo:
"I want to coach here," said Johnston. "There's a great opportunity to win something here and nobody else has done that.
Just nice to see Metro's brass admit that they've won nothing.

I definitely would not mind seeing EJ here. Maybe he would benefit from Novak's reported hard-nosed work ethic too.

I wouldn't mind EJ here, provided that he was in town and on the field productively playing.
If he's at home in Florida nursing a boo boo on his toe he can be on somebody else's roster.

Wow! Dallas wanted to get rid of GAM? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense does it? I'm not sure we have anything that Dallas really needs. I don't think they want Adu. Mulrooney will be back next season which is a big bonus for them.
It's too bad Guevara is leaving, despite him playing for NY and his whining, when he wanted to play, he was a very creative exciting player to watch. MLS needs to get more players with his type of skill, not necessarily attitude.
If Mo Johnston gets the head job I don't see im being much different than Nowak in regards to handling Freddy. I don't think he's bought into the Freddy hype and I'm not sure his situation will be much different, except NY has the meddling Lalas who might force the coach to play Adu no matter what. I don't think Mo would stand for that.
