I noticed on the ESPN website that 3 Real Salt Lake players where heading over to Germany for some off season training...don't we have development deals with at least one (Bayer perhaps) and maybe a couple other foreign clubs?

who would benefit the most?

send freddy so he can appreciate what it means to play at that level and how good he really has it as a 16 year old at DCU?

get Gros some practice on his crosses?

time to take Carroll or Simms to the next level?

a couple weeks in europe before the 2006 season starts to jump start Eski's return?

speaking of esky does Goff saying "He has put off rehabilitation until December" (or something like that) as bad as it sounds?

no, I think it just makes sense to give himself soem more time since next season doesn't start for, like, 29 months

Gros would be a great choice

I'd be surprised if Q doesn't try out in Europe

And Q and Freddy (and maybe Carroll) may want to train before the Jan. Nats camp

The last experience that United had in letting players go overseas to train was Ben Olsen. And we lost him for a couple of years. I belive that Kevin Payne has a 'hell no' attitude towards it now.

mmm, was that training?...I thought Benny was on loan since Forest was thinking about purchasing him...

That's how I remember it. If he didn't get his ankle snapped, he prolly would have been sold to them. The club was really impressed with Ben.

I say send some guys abroad and try to hone some weaker aspects of their game.

Actually, Troy Perkins trained overseas last offseason.

that was a loan and a chance for Olsen to make some coin

unfortunately when he came back his injuries had irrevocably ruined our right mid situation for WC 2006 :(

I thought it was a training session/loan that was extended until they could work out a transfer, and then they broke him.

United should have a 'break him you bought him' policy.

I guess once the guy gets paid I consider it a loan, not a training session.

I vote loan.

I also like your break-it-you-buy-it-policy.

Except I like having Olsen around ;)

First off, I think this is an excellent idea, especially for Freddy. Give him a couple of weeks to recoup from the season. He's young and should recover quickly. Send him to England to train until the winter break. I'm sure a lot of clubs would be interested. This would have to be training, no first team matches. I think this would give Freddy some perspective, especially if it were a big club. I believe, as well as valuable experience and continued conditioning, he might realize just how far he has to go to be the player everyone says he'll be.
Also, I believe Benny was on loan as he was playing in first team matches. A training session is, as the name implies training only. I lot of young MLS players have done this with various international clubs.

I know the off-season drags, but!!!! ;)

As far as the thread goes, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Freddy gets a European vacation but I have no idea how "training" is effected by the transfer rules.

It was loan, you can't play in first team games if you are there just for training. Forest was very interested in making his loan period a permanent transfer at the end of the season and the rest is history.

It isn't. For training typically DC would pay for the player to get there and may pay for lodging and food. Sometimes the club will put the player up with someone on the team or one of the host families that they use with their youth system. Also these sessions usually last a week or two. I'm not sure but, I think you can even do these on a tourist visa since you aren't being paid and the duration is so short so there are no work permit rules or transfer rules to worry about. Also because these things are only for a week or two, you can string together a few at different clubs and get 4-6 weeks worth of training with different clubs
