View Full Version : Names, Etc. for a Philly MLS Franchise

Given the recent Toronto announcement (and lack of DCU for the offseason!), I've been giving more thought to expansion again. Being from DC, I just have a natural antipathy for most sports things Philly (Eagles, Flyers, and now with the Nats, Phillies) but I really would like to see an MLS team there. First off, that antipathy would be great to fuel a natural rivalry with many roadtrip possibilities being so close. Second, I do have great friends from the area who are die hard sports fans, so I appreciate the depth of devotion sports fans from a "real" city can have. Third, Philly is just a huge market, and MLS should be there.
For my part, I dig the historical names, but I'd go for the Philly angle versus the National, Indepedence Hall/Liberty Bell thing. Maybe William Penn SC or Wm. Penn FC with the Penn statue on City Hall featured in the logo/badge.
So I just wanted to get your thoughts on what a Philadelphia team would look like. Fire away.

We've had some threads on this before. You'll get people saying names like 'Atoms' or 'Steel.' Both of which have historical significance from the regions' rich soccer past.
Someone before has suggested Philadelphia Union FC. I kind of like that idea except for the 'FC' part. Change it to 'SC' and I'll buy it. The idea behind 'Union' conveys the connection between southeast PA, South Jersey, and Delaware.

True. It only took you 3 years to get back to losing in the first round.
I would be rather proud.
And Philly Atoms seems like a nice name that would make the old-timers happy.

I am, and you should be proud that your team is officially the league's bitch.

I'm sorry you must be confusing me with a Chivas USA fan.
But your right, I shouldn't mock you in your time of mourning.
Lets let the Philly fans have their thread back, si?

I'm sorry you must be confusing me with a Chivas USA fan.Yeah, because you guys were head and shoulders above them, this season. Keep telling yourself that, I'm sure, eventually, you'll be able to fool yourself, if no one else.
Lets let the Philly fans have their thread back, si?Whatever you say, Mr. Threadjack.

With the current strikes with SEPTA and the school teachers, I am not sure that would be a very popular one right now.
