Statement from D.C. United Midfielder Christian Gomez

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 1, 2005) - In response to his red card ejection in Sunday’s MLS Cup playoff game against the Chicago Fire, D.C. United midfielder Christian Gomez issued the following statement.

“I want to apologize to my teammates, the fans, the club and Major League Soccer for my actions. What I did was wrong and I am deeply sorry for what happened. It was a frustrating night and I let the emotions get the best of me. People who know me know that those are not characteristics of who I am as a person. I want to thank the fans in particular for the wonderful support that they’ve have shown me and my family.”

Works for me. Poor judgment, ala Beckham, and he'll be hated for a while, but fans will love him again come next season.

(resisting the use of "ventilator" to describe the incident)

FWIW, credit to Gomez for the apology.

Brown is still a prick, though.

Good move from Gomez. He could have added the Fire and/or CJ Brown in his excuses as well.

No, what he said was adequate. ******** CJ Brown, he had it coming.

If Bobby Boswell had just taken CJ Brown out - like I specifically asked him to do last Monday night - none of this would have happened........

From the video showing him after the incident, you could see the regret.

Class move to publish the apology publicly.

In his locker room interview right after the game (shown on Univison last night) he was visibly shaken and dejected. When they asked him about the incident he just kind of looked down and shook his head.

Definately poor judgement but I can't see where the fans will hate him. DC fans anyway....

A good apology. I doubt that United fans will hold it against him. He'll get his due in Chicago next year, but I'll bet there won't be much carryover even among Fire fans (they did win after all).

On a related note: Has anyone heard whether MLS intends to impose any penalty against him? I would assume that he'll face some sort of suspension at the beginning season.

Good apology. Lets just put this behind us now. He can pay whatever fine or do whatever game suspension he needs to but its all good.

He's golden anyway.

It's all part of the MLS/United conspiracy to start Freddy in his place on April 2nd.

;) I'm kidding ;)
