I've watched the game twice now on video and totally confused on the tactics involving Fletcher.

Wasn't he supposed to be the Right Winger?? How much attacking penetration did he give accept two runs towards the end when boro just laid off him?

I see him run around arms failing on the left in the middle yet rarely on the Right. 90% of his passes that succeeded where under 10 yards.

Bardsley and O'Shea attacked down that line more than he did, unlike on the otherside Park.

Is the tactic a kind of diamond midfield leaving the outsides for the wing backs of O'shea and Richardson, and Smith, Scholes, Park and Fletcher running in circles wherever they like.

So could any one off his fans with a tape point out in the game what the "F" benefit he was to the team.

Coz for the life of me I could see the reason he stayed on.
Man u appeared to be 10 men trying avoid going in his direction and Boro always went down that channel.

People are quick to forget how crucial he was last season. Despite the entire team being poor this season and Fletcher not playing his preferred role, he is always the one singled out for criticism. Those that engage in this activity are a bunch of jokers and I openly question their support of the club. Perhaps they should watch a Scotland game once in a while, it might remind them of how good he can be when played correctly.

Fletcher's position was not a right winger in the match, at least not from what I've seen. He was a right midfielder. I am not sure if this is a case of him not making intelligent runs upfield or Fergie instructed him not to. Anyway, I saw a lot of short passes between Scholes, Smith, and Fletcher near the center circle. Scholes was the only who were making long passes. I also thought they positioned themselves too close to each other for them to be effective most of the time.

Boro used 3 central defenders to crowd out the middle and forced us to attack down the wing. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, our crosses from the wing came from Richardson, O'Shea and Bardsley. Those crosses SUCKED! Park was able to penetrate down the left but his delivery was poor at best. The only dangerous cross that I can remember came from Ronaldo down on the right. But it was too late... By the time he came on, the game has been lost.

Well since this thread is a dile of donkey boll[i]o[/]cks, and the 4-5-0-0-1 is the worst formation in football, anybody think this might be worth a shot (esp if Heinze wasnt injured & could play Brown's role and evne moreso if we signed a legit CB over the summer? Could be interesting to throw in against Chelsea, since with our injuries and the 4-5-0-0-1, we will lose that match. Simple as. A 4-4-2 might do the trick, but this would completely catch them off guard, imho.

So a high quality thread jack smells like donkey bollocks... :D

I posted a formation similar to that one a while back. I guess great minds really do think alike. ;) This would certainly be something interesting to try, but right now I just don't think SAF has the guts to try it.

Edit: I just saw you don't have yourself in your avatar anymore Billy. What up with that?

Brilliant FM-esque tactic.

I have seen more of him that any of you and I know what he is capable of when utilised correctly. Besides, what happened to all of the Fletcher praise from last season? It strikes me that people are quick to jump on an easy target. No-one likes him, so let's take any opportunity to bash him. How would you like to play in a midfield with Smith, Scholes or Miller?

Due to key injuries, we're not able to play him in his preferred position, and we all can admit that he might be a superb central midfielder, but he's most definitely not a winger.

I agree with Teso in that Fletcher looks a different player when played in his correct position. He's rarely got the chance this season.

Now, could United bring in a "World Class" player, who could be more valuable in different positions? Maybe. Doubtful we could afford more than one though.

I also agree with Teso. Fletch was very important last season as you can see from the results with and without him. This season he's been poor and I think a large part of that is trying to play in a make-shift midfield. If anyone wants to say that Fletcher has been poor this season, they're right. If anyone says that he doesn't deserve a place on the team, they're ignoring the evidence from last season.

Admittedly I have not seen Fletcher play for Scotland. Please describe the role he plays for them and how it is different than when he plays for United.
