It's always tempting to say the most recent hurt is the worst but I was flashing back to the absolute ass kicking that Ray Hudson's Miami gave us at the end of the 2000 season. Both games had a quality of the team absolutely rolling over. Both are humiliating losses at home. The Miami game served as the dismal end to a dismal season. We did score though. Last night served as a inexplicable end to what should've been a pretty decent season. No goals though. Talley was quoted as saying he felt sick after the Miami loss. Kovalenko noted that we ain't won ******** as of last night.
There can certainly be a case for the South American and Mexican debacles this year.
Just a little excersize in misery elongation.

The expectations were higher last night.

I agree that the Miami game meant nothing but a final nail to a miserable season. Well, it did suck that Diego Serna scored for Miami. And that game did likely coax the DC front office into hiring Hudson. Hmm...can I change my vote?

no, the worse was the 3-2 loss in the COPA against Catolica

Better watch out - you just violated Frog Boy's "we do not speak of that game" policy. He will unleash his fury upon you.

I thought this was a pretty hard and gut wrenching one to loose as well.

My vote too.
Last night just made us look stupid in our league. Pumas made us look horrible on a much larger scale. I deleted that game from my tivo much faster than last nights.

Last night. Meant a lot more. The 2000 team was terrible, and yeah that performance sucked but it was yet another nail in the coffin of a miserable season. This was a playoff game where we were defending a championship.

I agree, that was the most painful loss. We had the game won and let it slip away.
Yesterday, the let down came more gradually. You had time to readjust your hopes until they were gone. With the Catolica game, it all came crashing down in a hurry. Ouch!

Total Shedding.
And seeing Gomecito spit on another player made my stomach turn.

Same here. Yesterday's result just isn't as shocking to me as the CONCACAF Champions Cup blowout in Mexico City was -- man, what a humiliation that one was. And, of course, yesterday's stinker comes on the heels of the USOC and the Copa SudAmerica disappointments. Ugh -- this season the unthinkable has managed to become routine.

yeah, that sucked in the worst way.
I still say the PUMAS defeat was the worst. CONCACAF was a tourny that was winnable for United. I didn't see us getting by any other SA cup oppenents other that catolitica (which we didnt anyway.) And with the playoffs it was like 2 years ago to a point. Our last couple games we sputtered, limped into the playoffs, i was more worried than opptimistic.
The roster for the game in Mexico city makes that the worst loss of the year for me. we could have fielded a better team. A while ago I started a thread b1tching about my trivial "expecations". which was stupid, but united totally crashed and burned their way out of 4 touraments this year. that stinks.

No, get rid of such thought. First, remember that even just two years from now, nobody will remember the playoffs, or even who the MLS Cup finalist was, just who won and maybe who missed the playoffs. So it doesn't really matter if you lost in the first, second, or third rounds.
Maybe the Mexican one, but you had the valid excuse of its being so early in the season, and oh yeah, visiting teams don't normally do too well in Mexico City, in fact that it is second only to La Paz on the list of most difficult places to play in the world.
Now the Copa Sudamericana. MLS finally got its chance to play an international club competition while its players were in good form, and it was a superior competition the regular one (CC). I've always supported the whole early-season theory justifying those CC losses with the fact that the MLS teams who squeaked through the first round, buying themselves more season time to get in shape, generally did quite well in the latter rounds.
DC United's tie in the Copa Sudamericana absolutely cemented the early-season excuse with a decent performance in a superior competition. You scored multiple away goals on the under side of the world, handling the pressure of "fixture congestion" like a continental-class veteran club. Losing a big lead shows you had a big lead, that you had a storied South American club on the ropes. On the ropes! It was one of the proudest days for MLS, IMO.

i don't buy it. Don't emphasize "storied" too much. We didn't score away goals against boca juniors. And i can not in any way derive joy from blowing a lead. It makes it worse that this was a major competition and that we had them, dead to rights. This line of thinking is like stateing that Milan will be remembered for gaining such a big lead over liverpool, instead of being the guys that blew said lead. I think we represented MLS much better agaisnt chelsea.
