yes it is considered as a rural sport.
why is the southern ? espacially in the south-west in fact. it as even a name "l'ovalie" to describe the rugby culture in the south-west of france.

I think guys from this region are made to play rugby ! "des vrais gaillard" ! :D

and in addition, for your information, this southern part of france can be called "l'occitanie". it is a part of the country where, before French became the only official language in France, it was spoken the "langue d'oc" (the "langue d'oï" was spoken by the people in the north).
it is kind of a "cultural borders" which find its roots in the gallo-roman era

http://ieo.paris.free.fr/carteocc.gif

you can see that "l'ovalie" and "l'occitanie share the same "borders". this cultural aspect can explain why this region has developped through the years its own sport culture.

concerning rugby, AMAZING game this weekend!! stade francais (paris) - stade toulousain (toulouse) at the stade de france ( a lot of stades in that sentence :D ) live on TV5... and stade francais won! :)

basically the stade francais in paris is the only northern team... after that the power houses are located in the southwest (toulouse, biarritz etc)... lyon has a team actually (forget the name) as well...

Yea I read a little about how the team in Paris was in some ways upsetting the more traditionalist in the southern areas .By using Pink jerseys and remote controlled cars to bring out the punting cone and other things that are kinda different from the norm. And other things like that, but I also heard they are becoming more or less the newest power house in the league. Now granted I read it on Wikepdia so lord knows how accurate it is.

I am one of those that hate Stade Français. they make a joke of rugby. each game they play is an insult of the spirit of rugby. I would renamed the team "Circus Français" ou "showbiz français"...
there games at Stade de France are just entertainment, with stupid cheerleaders, intermission shows, they are gay icons with there nude calendar, now they play in pink colors or flowers jersey ! wtf ??? what next ?? what about playing with a feather up in the ass !
and there officials songs played in every rotation on the radio owned by there president (NRJ, the nimber one radio in france).
a shame, a real shame...
yes, they sell tons of jerseys, the make a lot of money so they can have a great team. but they disrespect the game, the spirit of rugby.

others great historical rugby teams in Paris : The Racing Club de France and the PUC (Paris Université Club). still 2 great teams in the young categories.

I think there has been a rugby dedicated thread here. If there are many Oval ball lovers, maybe you could revive it or create a new one. Well, especially since the six nations tournament is about to start ; and of course, the rugby WC this year !!

There's a lot of marketing going around the Stade Français, but you've got to admit they have a great team. They've won the french championship a couple of times and the european cup.

The show bizz stuff does'nt interfer with the quality of the team.

Ha ha ha true, I guess I was never aware there was a difference before. I know the different regions have different traditions and other differences. But to the extent of it all I guess I have much to learn :D Btw thanks for some more insight on that Rugby team from Paris

regardless of the marketing fanfare, the idea of having a game played in front of sold-out crowds of 80,000 is just plainly awesome and great for the sport of rugby... and its not only the stade francais that play there, last year i believe biarritz-toulouse had one of their games in paris... once again, sold-out game...

On the topic of Rugby. The Six Nations starts on Saturday. France are defending champs, and along with Ireland they are favourites. They take on Italy on Saturday in a match they should be able to win easily.

Anyone have predictions?

Mine are 1. France 2. Ireland 3. Wales 4. England 5. Scotland 6. Italy

England called up Jonny Wilkinson for their squad, but he's only played 50 minutes in 12 weeks. I reckon it will take him about 2 matches to get in full form, hurting Englands chances of finishing ahead of Wales. But what do I know I dont actually follow Rugby, although I would like to!

Let's hope we can easily beat Ireland. Don't forget that, during the WC2007, we are in the same qualifying group than Ireland and Argentina. If things turn bad, we could finish 3rd.

Sadly, we lost to the Germans, which brings back bad memories (Première Guerre mondiale et Seconde Guerre mondiale).
