The talks about Quebec separating are long over. There's no chance for it to happen. Even though prime minister Harper declared Quebec a nation within Canada in December.
I was born in Quebec and grew up in Ontario. I think of myself as a French-Canadian. I'm proud to be Canadian but also proud to be a Quebeker.

Pierre-Henri, you said you were in the French army before. If the United States ever tries to draft me would it make any difference that I have dual citizenship (French and American)?

If you're over 18, you can always renounce your American citizenship. However, you'd probably have to plan ahead of time and get the proper papers identifying yourself as a foreign citizen legally staying in the US.

Well, I did my conscription time, but my main field of operation was the officer mess hall at the Saumur Cavalry School*. I didn't see much action. But I must say that all the officers and NCO I've met were all pretty decent guys. I'm not anti-militaristic anymore.
I don't know how the dual citizenship works for military issues. I doubt they can draft you if you're a french citizen living in France -- obviously, the american MP's have no authority outside America. Of course, that means you would get busted as fast as you put a feet on american soil again. If I'm not mistaken, some American citizens who fled the VN war are still hidding in Canada, unable to cross the border again**.
* "garçon, une autre tournée !" is an order I'm very at ease with. No alcool, though. This was an army base, after all.
** is it true, or is it another urban legend ?

I wonder if that video isn't making fun of French Sepharad Jews in fact ?
"La vérité, ils se foutent de leur gueule sur la vie de ma mère !"
I know that all French people in here will read this sentence with the proper accent...
For the rest, I think our readers shall retain that the background music was from 'La Compagnie Créole', a very famous 80's West Indies band that reminds a lot of people of my generation about their distancing childhood (snif). It's also strongly linked to (recent) wedding parties memories...

I thought socialists were supposed to be anti-racist? I guess Frenchie socialists are a little different:

PARIS (AP) - France's Socialist Party on Saturday expelled politician Georges Freche after he was criticized for saying there were too many black players on the national soccer team, party officials said.

I don't understand your point.Freche was expelled from the party.Technically, he isn't socialist anymore.

do you ever go watch the LHC at charlemagne?
yes I did. when I was in DEUG, so maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I attended like 4 or 5 game. liked it (it so easy to be near the ice). I think that was the season after they got relegated (or losing there profesionnal statute or something like that). I can't really say because I've never really followed the french hockey ligue (and it is also very confused with all the teams going bankrupt, one year there 10 teams playing in the elite ligue, then 6, then 8 etc.)
maybe with the birth of the new federation, hockey will work better.

On a language-learning forum I read an interesting post about dubbing differences between The Simpsons in France and Québéc.Some notable differences:
"* In the Quebec version of the show, the "elite" characters--Reverend Lovejoy, Principal Skinner, Dr. Hibbert--speak upper class international French, whereas everyone else speaks basic Québécois. "The local dialect is reserved for the lower classes," says Plourde. "Which reveals something about how our society thinks about itself."
"* In France, Sideshow Bob becomes Tahiti Bob, reflecting the old country's imperialistic sense of humour. Newscaster Kent Brockman, meanwhile, becomes the German-accented Kurt Brockman.
* In the Quebec version of the famous episode where Bart goes to France, Bart speaks Quebec French and initially finds the Provençal dialect of the locals incomprehensible. When he finally picks it up, his conversion is signified by his being able to tell the difference between champagne and mousseux--another class-based distinction.
* In Quebec, Homer's beloved donuts become "les beignes Americains"; in France, they are not donuts at all, but rather hoity-toity "patisseries."
* Jokes that would not fly in America are commonplace in French translations. For example, when Reverend Lovejoy leads a boycott against Jewish clown Krusty, and leads a mob burning Krusty paraphernalia, he cries "Let's have a holocaust!" -http://www.snpp.com/other/articles/simpsonsintheory.html

I forgot to post this interesting excerpt from The Simpsons' article Caste of Characters: "This approach, Plourde says, betrays an "imperialist" attitude towards language animated by the nation's colony-holding past.
To support his theory, Plourde notes that the only two Simpsons characters who were not assigned standard French accents are both dark-skinned: Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the immigrant Kwik-E-Mart clerk, and Homer's black co-worker, Carl. Though Apu hails, according to plot, from India, he has been given a quasi-Arabic accent by the French. "A lot of corner shops are owned by people from North Africa or Lebanon," Plourde asserts. "There is even a slur in French, 'On va chez l'Arabe,' meaning, 'We're going to the corner shop.' " As for Carl, his voice has been pidginized - though not in any easily identifiable way."

I was curious if some one could clear up some info on French Rugby. I enjoy French soccer allot, and as of late I have been watching allot of Rugby. From what I have read it seems like the French have had some power house teams, and have done well on the national level as well. I was curious does any one know why the game is so popular in the southern regions? The furthest North I could find a team was in Paris. Also I hear its kind of considered a yokel rural sport, is that the case? Thanks for any info.
