Pierre-Henri, je pense que ça devrait te plaire. ;)
Thanks. And some people still ask me why I quit my job.
I sure HATE the french educational system. You can't imagine the kind of morons you meet in the IUFM (ie : educational schools). On such matters, I'm deeply conservative : the only way to learn anything is to work, work and work again. To hell with their "students centered" methods, their "constructivism" and their "amusing activities" ! I wasn't treated as a teacher, but as a Disneyworld entertainer.
To see illiterate 17 years old students in highschool is disheartening enough. But when the system forces you to give them good grades, and let them go to college... hit the chairman's desk with your resignation letter and slam the door are the only good things to do.
Such a painful spot you hit there, Nanbawan ! RAGE ! RAGE ! RAGE !
Rage ... and action, with "back to basics" associations :

I'm currently jobless. A Phd in humanities, even with full honors, doesn't offer you many career opportunities in France. Universities are going down, and the private sector hates Phd's. Not that you can find many jobs in any field today, mind you. BTW, I'm not the only one in that situation. French academia is simply dying of poverty.
And yes, I think the french educational system is really, really in bad shape. It suffers from the same difficulties than the american public school system : no money, poor wages, increasing violence (many school were destroyed during the recent riots), decrease of the students overall level and work ethic. I guess there's nothing original here, that's the common situation almost everywhere.
It is also linked with the unemployement issue. Since the unemployement level is so high, government tries to keep students at school longer and longer (so they don't appear in the stats). And this, regardless of their actual abilities. Let me remind you here that french universities are non-selective by law. It means that they have to accept full hordes of young people with a very poor level, who are here only because they have nowhere else to go. And they have to give them plenty of diplomas, with a lot of good grades, just to keep them happy.
And here you say : that's the situation of the US public system. Indeed. But the main difference in France is that we have nothing else than the public system. All schools and universities have to follow the same rules, the same program, the same recruitment system, the same teaching methods, obey to the same bureaucracy. No diversity, no independance, no creativity, no choice.
Anyway, I don't need long explanations. It's just a matter of money. A public flagship university like Wisconsin-Madison has a budget of 34 000€ per student (1). The average budget per student in France is slightly less than 7 000€. It can drop as low as 1 200€ in some humanities & social sciences centered universities.
We can't do miracles with third-world fundings, and that's the bottom line.
--------------------
(1) I'm not even talking about US private universities here !

Nice people? In Paris? :eek:i've never shared the conventional wisdom on parisians/londoners/new yorkers... you just have to realize they lead hectic hurried lives; they'll give you directions to the louvre but they can't be all day about it!

Nice people? In Paris?
You have an operating window for that between the beginning of Spring and the end of May when the hot air starts to be saturated with pollution...;)
But I confirm, Parisians are indeed human beings. Even more so out of tube or outside working hours. You can always tell yourself not to suscribe to stereotypes but once, a lady gave me the few cents lacking at the cashier in a XIth arrondissement supermarket. I was amazed !! :D
That's what I call charm...
Anyway, if valenjak isn't too bothered leaving big cities, he'll be in Heaven for his next visit in the country.

truffle butter sounds great.
it reminds me of the recipe for a truffle omelette. which is a good entrée in a truffle menu.
the idea is having the truffles "work". you put the eggs and butter in tupperware with the truffles. they flavor the butter, and the eggs (right through the shells!) and you don't even need to use any of the truffles themselves.
you follow that with a poulard en demi deuil... slice the truffle razor thin, cut little slits in the skin of the capon and and slip the slices just underneath so it looks all polkadotted...

You always find a guignol video that deals with this kind of current affairs.

My turn :
Il y a quelque chose de pourri au Royaume de l'UMP...

Very awkward indeed. The kind of story I won't have a definitive opinion on for the moment...The worst is, it could only be the tip of the iceberg. One of many attempts from both sides to emerge.
