The industrial sector is still huge on European terms in France. Automotive (Renault, Peugot, Citroen, Michelen, etc...) is only second to Germany in strength in Europe. And Auronatical is #1. France also makes a lot of steel.
It's too bad the the NSR has turned into a dumping ground of conservitave tripe. Hey America, you've got two wars to worry about at the moment. So take it easy, eat your freedom fries, enjoy your mounting obesedy, and leave the French alone.
And they say that the French are anti-American. Uggg... We should take a look in the mirror.hey, let's not get excited about what charles krauthammer has to say! hey, even Time's "paris correspondant" is awash in bilge, so what can you expect from their resident jarhead? Time itself is getting pretty dodgy; i recently re-subscribed, and was shocked to see it resembles People a lot more than it does the Time i used to know! its main purpose these days seems to be flogging Time-Warner products!
BS NSR isn't that bad sl7vk! ever look arount Guardian Talk or even the BBC's h2g2?
your take on industry here is good: renault's shares are going through the roof, even though ghosn is disappointed with only 3,5MM€ profits in 2005 (compare to ford and GM!) and don't forget we are an energy exporter and the leader in space technology.
and as for the french being antiamerican, what a laugh! i'm a king here! it's like getting a free ride through life just for being american, they ADORE us!

Is there any cheap real estate in Brittany left. Stuff that is within .5 km of the coast? I've been looking and quite pleased with prices in the Lannion area. How are things in your neck of the woods Nanbawan?
Towards Lannion (west of Lannion) there are still newer home options around 180k euros to be had.

I dunno in details, i'll try to find a link, but the Côte d'Emeraude (Dinard - Saint-Malo - Cancale) is quite expensive, and it's getting worse with all the Parisians coming from the TGV and of course the British who peacefully -but still- invade us. Even M. de Villepin has been rumoured recently to buy estate around Saint-Malo...Around me, what used to be field are filling with new estate popping out like mushroom ! Hurry !
I think it's always possibele to find something interesting at a reasonable price and more likely in 22 or 29 which are not as fancy as 35 yet (crazy cause in fact Ille-et-Vilaine has a tiny bit of coast compared to the rest of Brittany). The trick is to have the 'bon tuyau'...
I leave you, I'm about to make my little ride on the coastal road...:p

It's part of the package provided by tour operators : "get mugged, get swindled, get caught in a riot : feel the parisian spirit".
Better than Disneyworld, isn't it ?

i don't know about you, but i would be in an incredibly bad mood after that... if you look on the champs-elysees or notre dame, it's so obvious how they do it... it's kind of sad too since many of them are young teens that come from eastern europe or are very poor... but a lot of kids from the banlieu who do it 2

Navy loses €3m sonar
Paris - The French navy made a red-faced admission on Wednesday - that it had lost a multi-million dollar sonar navigation device after its cable ripped in stormy waters.
French defence minister Michele Alliot-Marie confirmed a report in the country's satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaine, and said an investigation had been launched into how the €3m (about R20m) device was mislaid.
Alliot-Marie said: "An inquiry is underway to determine whether a technical or a human error is at the origin of this problem."
Le Canard Enchaine reported that the captain of the De Grasse frigate decided, against his lieutenants' advice, to try out the 10-ton sonar in rough seas in an exercise in the south western Gulf of Gascony on March 24.
The top-of-the-range device is one of the most sophisticated in the world, capable of detecting an enemy submarine 150km away.
It is part of a $50m underwater combat system.

What cracks me up is that the BRAC is designed to reduce spending by about $40 billion over 10 years or something like that, which sounds like a pretty decent idea...
...except that we spend that much in about 4 months in Iraq, so what's the point?

The Canard Enchaîné : provides the truth and shameless puns since 1916. I could not live without it.
You don't understand anything, anyway. Losing the sonar was part of a big plan. First, the "Clemenceau" is still adrift somewhere in the African seas, allright ?
Now, let's imagine that the "Clemenceau" could retrieve the lost sonar : sudden surge of patriotic pride, people happy to pay their taxes again, Jacques Chirac president for the third time, joy and happiness for all.
During my national service in the cavalry, our colonel told us that, when he was a young officer, he drowned his AMX30. He forgot to clasp the brakes, and the tank slid back into the river. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but he was still remembering the funny report he had to write. They had to start a very special fishing party, and probably deserve a trophy for a capture of that size :p :

So, you're not that young and you're not that tall either...:D :p
I remember an orientation meeting with the Army and the officer who was there looked at me and said : "OK, you, don't even think about the cavalry ! " :o
