i can see Hoffenheim be a reasonable team in 5 years maybe even in the 1. BuLi... He seems to spend his money on fundamental things (youth system) and attractive facilities... If Hopp and Rangnick stay around this team will have a good future (but maybe not permanent).

Yes, I think he's doing it right. And that region actually needs something else to take some pride in besides it's sheer beauty and the Air and Automotive Museum in Sinsheim. :D

if you look at Freiburgs pictures, all of their fans are either small kids or old people or hippie-students...I'm sure it's very fierce...

true, true... :D

Hoffenheim gained their promotion in front of a frenetic crowd of 3080!!!

wow, what an enrichment for 2nd Bundesliga...

SV Wehen, champion from Regionalliga South, is the same.
They also have a big money source, Heinz Hankammer,
owner of company Brita and also president of Wehen.
He sponsored Wehen since 1979, and led them from
district league into the 2. Bundesliga.

But to be honest i didn´t watch many RL South matches this season,
so i can´t rate the teams very good.
I was more interested in RL North, because there were several classical
traditional teams. Teams, that have spirit, like St.Pauli, Dresden, Union,
Lubeck, Osnabrueck, former European cup winner like Madgeburg, ...

Don't know much about Hoffenheim, but I know one of their players very well. I tell you, he could be playing for a big team in the 1. Bundesliga. He played for Hertha BSC Berlin, his name is Sejad Salihovic. He has done brilliantly playing for the U-21 Bosnian National Team. One player to look out for.

Thanks for that tip. Will definitely look out for him next season! :)

He'll get some exposure next year for sure then.

looks like hoffenheim will get Sarstedt to be a part of Rangnick's training staff.

He has one of the hardest shots I have ever seen, and I'm not even exagerrating. His only downfall, and the reason why he didn't stick with Hertha, is the fact that he's a "party animal" ie he likes to drink and stay out late the night before the games. He has said that he's matured and that he has focused 100%. So far for Hoffenheim, he has scored 10 goals this year.

Just a glimpse of his shot.. here, a goal against the Czech Republic U-21...

Dietmar Hopp said he's no "2nd Abramovitch", since he doesn't sign expensive 'stars' but invests a lot of money in the infrastructure & youth work. Let's wait up if that's the same in a few years, when his team perhaps will be playing 1. Bundesliga...

Btw: Do you really think that Hoffenheim & Wehen will manage to fill their planned 30,000 capacity stadiums?

It's bad when a Freiburg fan jumps at the opportunity to pick on "minnows" even if he is "kidding."

Pretty f#cking bad.

What? You can't wait to kick Gladbach's and Mainz' asses too??

What's up with that?? Don't see you mentioning them???

Kidding or not, you'd better not talk too quickly. I'm sure Herr Hopp is going to buy some better players for Hoffenheim for the coming season.

Hell, he might come for some of YOURS!!

Better not talk too quickly........

wooooooooah, don't get all touchy...You know i love rivalries, and personally i don't really care...I know they'll probably be better than us in the future, i don't doubt that at all...Nor am i speaking too soon, i just don't really respect teams who buy their success over a few years.

the team has hardly any support...yet they're building a 30 000 stadium for a team that can barely get 4000 for their most important matches...yeah, yeah a lot more fans will come along...I'm just excited for a new team to hate
and yeah, sure i'm also excited to play Gladbach and Mainz, but i actually have respect and sympathy for them.

Sportfriend, you don't have much room to talk. Check out Freiburg's attenadance in 92/93, the season they were promoted http://fussballdaten.de/vereine/scfreiburg/1993/spiele/

the lesson is that teams can build a new fan base when starting from very little and that you shouldn't be so close-minded about a team, Hoffenheim should be held up as an example of how to approach team building from a community perspective.

Uli Hesse-Lichtenberger has respect for Hoffenheim and so should you. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=391555&root=europe&cc=5901 "Germany's Anti-Abramovich"
Or are you one of the people Uli refers to in the last sentence; "I guess the tradition-laden word of football has become a bit anxious the experiment at Hoffenheim could actually work."

No. I think Hopp has to know that he'll get new fans from the immediate area, (Heidelberg, Sinsheim, etc.), however, I think he realizes he'll get more opposing fans at the new stadium rather than fans of his own club.

And their money is just as good as money of the people who will embrace his team. :D

I believe more people than you think in that region will like not having to travel to Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Kaiserslautern or Frankfurt to see first or second league football.

I have friends in that region. I know I'll be going up there when they play 1860, FCK, SCF (If SCF aren't promoted) and possibly Greuther Fuerth.

Deutsche Welle had a good article on it here.....

Germany's Richest "Village Team" Reaches Second Division (http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,2475303,00.html)

This article says they might consider playing a few of their matches at Karlsruhe's Wildparkstadion. I'm trying to figure out why they would do that?

Not because their stadium is so great. I know it's too small. But here is what I wrote to Deutsche Welle to ask how they came up with that......

And if there are KSC fans out there, my comments on the stadiums are MY OPINION.....

Do any of you how know the region think I'm mistaken in the logic below??

I was wondering why your story suggested that TSG Hoffenheim could play some 2nd Bundesliga home matches at Karlsruhe's Wildparkstadion? Has the club made an announcement to that effect?

I ask because the Carl-Benz Stadion in Mannheim is a bit closer to Hoffenheim, is already well up to Bundesliga standards and is arguably easier for the Hoffenheim fans to travel to.

Plus, what would be the advantage in sharing a stadium with a 1st Bundesliga team, when you have a Bundesliga-ready stadium sitting closer to you (OK, only about 10km closer, but it's closer) that houses an Oberliga team (Waldhof Mannheim)?

The Carl-Benz Stadion has hosted the old German SuperCup Final in the past (Dortmund v. Kaiserslautern 1996) and the final of that match's successor, the German League Cup in 2001 (Hertha BSC Berlin v. Schalke 04).

I would think the Carl-Benz Stadion would be a much better option for TSG Hoffenheim next season when they play the clubs who travel well in the 2nd Bundesliga. It holds just over 26,000 spectators and again, should be easier for the TSG fans and other fans to reach than the Wildparkstadion in Karlsruhe.

Not only will their fan-base grow, they will steal some fans from the "established" supported teams in that area and have you not thought that Mr. Hopp is building the stadium that big to accomodate the opposing fans too? Their money is just as good as anyone else's.....

Teams like Gladbach, Koln, 1860 and Aachen travel very well. It's close enough to Mainz that some people who never get to see their team at home will travel there to see FSV play Hoffenheim.

I know the region well. I've spent quite a bit of time there, and yes, I've been to Hoffenheim. Not for sports, but I know a family there. Those people in that region are starting to get pretty excited. This is great for them!

Most in that region support the big "national" clubs (Bayern, BVB, Leverkusen, Bremen and Gladbach) along with the teams not far away like Stuttgart, Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt and a few support KSC. Hoffenheim is bit far away from Freiburg to consider them some type of "local" rivals for you guys.

I'm just excited for a new team to hate

no from the way you sound, i never seem to think about anything...always just irrational, aren't i?

great, but i really hope they don't take out Mannheim....

don't matter, the point is they're still in the same Bundesland...On the Schwaben side as well... which means they're an automatic rival - regional rival...And if we're playing against them next season... that'll be our only true derby

What for? You don't have enough?
i actually respect and "like" a lot of teams...But hating teams is a lot of fun, not gonna lie to you.

No. Not always irrational, but you ridiculed a small club building a big stadium. I'm just showing you something you might not have looked at.

Dude, both Mannheim teams are in the Oberliga. They haven't mattered for a long time and won't matter again for a long time. They took themselves out.

If you want to consider them a "regional rival", I can't say anything against that. I just don't think many of them will feel the same way. But then again, with Karlsruhe in the 1. Liga and Mannheim in football hell, maybe you guys will be "it" for them.

They would not be "local rivalries", but I think they will quickly develop rivalries with Kaiserslautern, Wehen and Mainz. Those places may not be in the same state, but they are more "local" or "regional" when it comes to Hoffenheim than Freiburg is.

Because they just happen to be in the same state doesn't really make it "local" or even "regional"....

Baden-Wuerttemburg is not a small place.

What for? You don't have enough?

i actually respect and "like" a lot of teams...But hating teams is a lot of fun, not gonna lie to you.

Now here is where I guess my age gets in the way. I f#ckin' hate Schalke and Bayern, but it doesn't feel like "fun" to do so.

Respect and sympathy, or do you know they will probably kick your asses anyhow?? LOL!!

that doesn't matter, the point is i respect them...I'll hate any team who kicks our ass, but respect is different than like... isn't it????

Sure. You can respect a team and hate them too. I'm like that with Bayern, Schalke and others.
